The Big “To-Do”

Yikes! Only 79 days until my due date. Which means 76 days until my scheduled c-section. I know it seems like a while, but I know it will be here soon and I need to get organized. My own personal system memory (a.k.a. “mommy brain”) could use a boost these days — if I don’t write it down I forget it — so I’m writing up this master list mostly for my own benefit. It’s basically just a big “to do” list of things I want/need to have done before the baby is born. Hopefully by having it out here it will keep me accountable! At the very least, hopefully I won’t forget anything.

Must Do:
– Install infant carrier in Forester
– Wash/sort baby clothes
– Pack hospital bag
– Double-check on child care arrangements while we’ll be off giving birth 😉
– Remind my publisher that I won’t be writing articles during May, June, July
– Set up crib (even though dollars to donuts she’ll just want to sleep in the baby carrier like both of her brothers did)

Want to Do:
– Stock freezer with two weeks’ worth of dinners
– Bake and freeze some quick breads and muffins for easy snacks
– Make sure pantry & medicine cabinet are stocked to avoid last-minute shopping trips
– Put together basket with pens, thank you cards, stamps, and address book so I can easily jot notes and mail them off
– Stockpile of at least one month’s worth of diapers
– Write out, stamp, and date any cards that need to go out during the month of June/early July
– Wrap a couple small gifts for the boys “from” their baby sister
– Have a couple of bottles on hand, just in case (already have a sample can of formula, but hopefully nursing will go as smoothly as it did with Noah and we won’t need to resort to this)
– Have comfy post-baby clothes ready (who wants to wear maternity clothes longer than they have to, plus I will need to be mindful of my c-section scar — no jeans for a while, LOL)

Am I missing anything?

One Lucky Lady

That would be me. Seriously, I have some pretty great friends and family, and hands-down the best husband ever! Yesterday after picking Jake up from CCD we were supposed to meet my brother-in-law and his girlfriend for brunch at Double-O Grille. They came to visit for the weekend and we thought it would be a nice way to spend late Sunday morning. So you can imagine my surprise when we walked in and headed to the side room where both of our familes were, as well as my very good friends Kelly and Lisanne!

Drew knew I didn’t want a baby shower, but he said that he wanted to do something to show his appreciation for me and all that I do. Seriously, my eyes welled up with tears! Sweetest. Guy. Ever. And I can’t believe no one gave away the surprise (though I was suspicious something was going on yesterday morning — still, I totally did not expect it). We all stuffed ourselves silly on the yummy brunch buffet — eggs, french toast, bacon, sausage, chicken marsala, black bean salad, potato salad, shrimp, bagels, smoked salmon… pretty much anything you could want to eat. (One might consider diet pills after enjoying all the delicious food there!)

I was also spoiled with sweet gifts for the baby (and the mama!) even though Drew told everyone they did NOT have to bring anything except themselves. My cousin Angie made a diaper cake, and after making them for many people, I was really excited to get one myself! Lisanne set me up with a great kit for my new sewing machine, including fabric, patterns, and lots of doo-dads, in addition to some teas to enjoy while I craft. My parents, in addition to a ton of baby clothes, gave me a set of bath goodies from Bath & Body works in the Japanese Cherry Blossom fragrance. One very special gift was from Drew’s aunt. When she was born, her aunt made her a Sunbonnet Sue quilt, and there was one extra quilt square. She had it framed for the baby! The quilt square is probably close to 70 years old, so it really is a special heirloom. I got so many nice baby outfits from everyone else. (Good thing I didn’t have a chance to do much shopping, LOL! We’re all set for a while!).

I was just so happy that everyone did this for me. Seriously — I am one very lucky girl and I know it! Afterwards almost everyone came back to the house for a while and we all just hung out. What a great day!

Because baby girls look cute in blue

crochet baby sweater

Who says baby girls have to wear just pink or purple? When I saw this cornflower blue yarn at Webs last month, I thought it was so pretty. I also thought the cotton/viscose blend of the Queensland Hyacinth yarn would be good for a light summer baby sweater. I used the pattern for the sweater in this sweater set and extended the sleeves a bit. I absolutely love the shell design on the cuffs and the bottom of the sweater! The pattern was really simple and worked up fast. For my first crochet sweater, I’m really happy with how it came out.

Double-Digits!

25weeks_picnikIt’s hard to believe that I’m just days away from the last trimester! Next Sunday will officially begin my 90-day countdown. I snapped this shot in the hotel mirror while we were on vacation. I figured since I was dressed up, I might as well take advantage! I feel enormous, but everyone keeps telling me that I look small, so who knows? At any rate, I figure now is a good time for me to start looking for good deals on things like diapers and wipes. You know me — I’m always hunting for the best sale! I’d like to have a decent stockpile before June so there won’t be a need to run out to the store because we’re out of diapers.

I’m also starting to think about stocking the freezer with meals to make those first few weeks easier. By the time the baby arrives, our CSA will be in full swing, so I know we’ll have fresh veggies, but now is a good time to start packing away some dinners, snacks, quick breads, etc. I already have the book, Don’t Panic — Dinner’s In the Freezer! and it’s great! I’ve made several of the recipes in there and they’ve all been good. I’m considering getting Don’t Panic–More Dinner’s in the Freezer: A Second Helping of Tasty Meals You Can Make Ahead since the first book is so good. Although I’ve also thought of getting Dream Dinners: Turn Dinner Time Into Family Time with 100 Assemble-And-Freeze Meals. (Dream Dinners is also a chain of prep-your-own-dinner establishments, and the book is written by the women who started the business.) Maybe I’ll just get them both since I do like having meals ready-to-go. I don’t want to waste time, though, because I know the last couple of months fly by and I don’t want to be stuck with nothing to eat, especially since I’ll really have to take it easy after my c-section! Do you have any favorite freezer meals (aside from lasagna and enchiladas)? I’d love to hear what they are!

Baby Update :-)

Wow, today is just flying by! I had an OB appointment this morning, and I got lucky again — no waiting, hooray! I am one of those boring patients that they love. Nothing to report, no real questions to ask. Everything is going along fine. Even my doctor remarked that I look small, but I am measuring on target, so I guess it’s just the way baby girl is curled up in there. She also gave me the official date for my c-section: June 3rd! That is the day after our 8th anniversary. I plan to enjoy a nice, big anniversary dinner the night before, so I won’t be hungry after the point when I have to fast. Actually the no-eating shouldn’t be too bad. She just said no food after midnight, and they usually do the scheduled c-sections first thing in the morning. After my c-section with Noah they let me eat real food right away (best turkey sandwich ever, I swear!), so hopefully the same policy will apply and I won’t be stuck on a liquid diet for a day or so. But we’ll worry about that later.

I had such a great experience last time at this particular hospital, and I hope it will be a repeat performance. I remember thinking that it actually felt like a mini-vacation! The nurses were wonderful, the room was comfortable, and heck – even the hospital food wasn’t bad! Saturday I’ll be 24 weeks along. Crazy! I feel great and have no real complaints. Some back pain here and there and despite the fact that everyone tells me that I don’t even look pregnant (great, so I just look fat? LOL!), some tasks are getting difficult. I noticed that my belly gets in the way when I wash dishes and I literally roll out of bed in the morning. But otherwise, things are pretty uneventful, and for that I am thankful!

Two Down, One To Go

There were three “big” items we needed/wanted to get before June when it’s baby-time. 1) A swing. The swing was a lifesaver with Jake and a convenient item to have with Noah. Jake was soothed to sleep every night by the swing and it help a lot with his fussiness. Noah didn’t seem to care either way, but it was a safe place to put him down when I needed to go to the bathroom or cook or eat dinner. As much as I love holding babies, you simply can’t do it all the time. (At least I couldn’t.) We’d donated our old one last year, and it was one that was given to us anyway. Last week Drew found a great swing on clearance, so that was out of the way. 2) A crib bumper. True, not a necessity, I guess, but I think a crib looks terribly depressing without one. We never had problems with either of the boys rolling into it or anything so I did want to get one. We’d also donated our old crib set last year at the same time we donated our swing. Target has some cute bumpers on sale this week, so I picked this one up:

new crib bumper

I think it’s cute and the price was right. Some of the bumpers I’ve seen are just ridiculous. The manufacturers might be able to fool a first-time mom, but not me!

Last we just need to replace our travel system. Our infant carrier is past the “expired” date on the bottom, and I’d rather err on the side of caution by replacing it. Besides, the stroller is really beat-up. We used it a lot, that’s for sure! So we’re just waiting for a couple gift cards to come in (thanks to our credit card rewards and MyPoints!) and then we can cross that last item off our list. (It, too, has a polka-dot pattern. I guess I sense a theme here, LOL!)

It feels good to get these items out of the way so I can stress about other things 😉

Friday Bullets

  • I am sooo tired today. The last couple of nights I have not slept well and I feel exhausted. Blargh.
  • I’ve never considered plastic surgery for my face, and after reading this anecdote on Drew’s blog, I am totally skeeved out! How D. makes connections sometimes cracks me up. Only he could somehow relate facelift scars to weight loss drugs (like Fenphedra).
  • We have no weekend plans, and I’m happy about that! I’d like to just hang out and knit and watch movies.
  • I found some black tea scented body wash at Dollar Tree last night. It smells really good in the bottle! We’ll see how it is in the shower.
  • I was surprised and happy to read that Kirsten Gillibrand was chosen to replace Hillary Clinton as NYS Senator. She was our rep in Congress (and yes, I voted for her in the fall). People forget that New York State isn’t just the five boroughs and Long Island. I’m not saying she is perfect (I don’t agree with her on everything), but  it’ll be great to have someone from “way up here” (LOL!) representing us. I wish her luck!
  • Current random cravings: grape juice, toast & butter (real butter, thank you!), and spoonfulls of peanut butter with a few chocolate chips on there for good measure. The coconut and spicy food craving seems to have subsided for now.
  • Lisanne sent me a package containing adorable baby girl clothes earlier this week! I have been too lazy to take a photo, but you have to check out the onesie she made. Is that perfect or what?
  • Yesterday Jake told me that he is sick of the cold and of winter in general. When my snow-loving six-year-old says it, you know it’s bad.
  • 56 days until Spring.

Someone Hide My Wallet!

Thank you all for your sweet words! Everyone is certainly excited that Babe Bee is going to help balance out the testosterone in this house, LOL. I know my Babci G. really was hoping this baby would be a girl, and she was so happy when I told her 🙂 And how funny, but the first thing everyone seems to want to do is shop. I am hoping to have some “me time” on Sunday and maybe go look for a few baby girl clothes. But in the meantime, I’ve been browsing online. The selection of girls’ clothes is so vastly different from boys’ clothes. It’s just unreal! There are quite a few cute things out there though. I just love this crocheted dress from Baby Gap. How sweet would that be with tights and patent leather shoes? Not that a little baby should be wearing patent leather shoes, I guess, but… still, the idea is cute. I love this patchwork dress, too. And this knit one-piece and this embroidered top too. I might have to start doing more paid blogging in order to support all the shopping I want to do! I’m holding back for now, though because realistically I know that during the summer she’ll live in onesies, just like the boys did.

Also, and I’m getting way ahead of myself here, I really am looking forward to being able to style her hair into cute updos at some point. I’ve ooh’ed and ahh’ed over the adorable girls’ hairstyles on She Does Hair and it’s kind of cool that at some point I’ll be able to do those cute little twists and braids, too 🙂 So cute!

The Envelope Please…

Sorry for making everyone wait, but we wanted to call our immediate family first. And then there was dinner, and the boys wanted to do this and that and… Well, you know how it goes! The ultrasound went well and the baby looks healthy 🙂 Ten fingers and ten toes. No flipper babies here! (Sorry, that’s a “Brain Candy” joke for those who might not get it.) And the tech was able to tell the gender. She was certain that we are having a girl! Can you believe it? I had to ask, “Are you sure?” LOL! But the baby’s legs were wide open so her girlie parts were discernable.

Poor Noah was rather distraught and in denial for a good while. He really wanted a boy, but he’s come around. Jake was excited to find out that he’ll have a sister. So there you go! Now I have to run and get the boys washed and in bed, but I figured you have waited long enough. Have a great night!

Pink or Blue?

bearsI know you all are awaiting the results of ultrasound! But I figured that I’d just let everyone know it’s not until 2:15 this afternoon, and then I have a regular OB appointment immediately afterwards. I probably won’t be back home until between 4 and 4:30 assuming they’re right on time, so I won’t be posting until around dinnertime probably. Now they’re doing the sonograms right in my doctor’s office, and I love that we don’t have to go to the hospital for it. The hospital is pretty much right across the street, so it’s not a distance issue, but who wants to go to the hospital if you don’t have to?

Yesterday I polled my friends on Facebook and it seems that almost everyone is guessing “girl.” Now, I’m not sure how many of those are gut feelings and how many are people who just are hoping for me to have a girl since we already have two sweet little boys, LOL! Either way, it is very exciting and more than just hopefully finding out the baby’s gender, I’m just hoping that everything else looks perfectly healthy. That is the purpose of the ultrasound, after all. Getting to find out if the baby is a boy or girl is just an added bonus. Wish me luck and I’ll update you all later today!
