Ridiculously Cute Baking Pans

Ironically, I’m trying not to do so much baking this fall because I don’t need the extra calories, but that doesn’t stop me from looking through cooking stores searching out new and cool cookware and bakeware. First I found this giant cupcake pan:

Now we all know that cupcakes are hot little pastry items right now. There are cupcake bakeries, cupcake decorating classes, and cupcake designs on clothing. Love the cupcake! So why not just make a giant cupcake? I think this guy might actually be a challange to cut and serve, but it is quite clever. Still, I think that the true appeal of the cupcake is that they’re little.

Then, just in time for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and my birthday (cough…), are these pumpkin cake pans:

I know I’ve seen pumpkin cake reipes before that use Bundt pans, and I guess that you could just as easily use two Bundts or mini-Bundts and achieve the same effect, but hey, I’m just looking for cute here. Also, with these pans there isn’t any wasted cake, and I think there would have to be if you used the traditional pan — you’d end up having to trim the bottoms to get the two pieces to fit together to form that plump pumpkin shape. Anyway, useful or not, these pans (both by Wilton) get my cute baking award. (If I actually had a cute baking award, that is).

Crock Pot Cooking Malaise

When I was growing up, my mom was constantly using her Crock Pot to cook dinners. In college, my friend Kelly and I often used a Crock Pot when we had our apartment senior year. I’ve seriously been using one forever. So what gives? Lately everything I make in one comes out, well, ehhh…. I don’t get it.

Tonight, for example, I decided to try the Orange Chicken recipe that is in the new Kraft Food & Family magazine. It was easy and I thought it sounded really good. About a half an hour before it would probably be done, I checked on it and the chicken didn’t look appetizing and the “sauce” was all watery. It looked nothing like the photo in the magazine, that’s for sure. I ended up dumping everything out of the crock and into a saucepan. The sauce thickened up nicely around the chicken and it turned out okay. (Some seasoning issues, but that is purely my own taste and nothing to do with the Crock Pot issue). Last week I made beef stew in it, and it wasn’t good. I’d recently made Chicken Cacciatore and found it barely edible. Seems that I’m just not enjoying the texture. When I make soups, I don’t have a problem. It’s just frustrating because the Crock Pot does make my life a little easier in the evenings, but I’m not going to sacrifice taste for convenience, either. 🙁

Apple Picking Perfect

Mosaic

If yesterday wasn’t the perfect day to go apple picking, I don’t think there is one! After CCD for Jake, errands, and lunch we headed over to Greig Farm for some apple picking. We picked Empire, Jona Gold, Gala, Red Delicious, and Macoun apples. We also picked out four pumpkins. I think the boys pretty much ate their weight in apples yesterday! When we got home I made yet another apple crisp because it might be the best fall dessert ever 🙂 It was a picture-perfect day. And now I just have to figure out what to do with 20 pounds of apples! (I see myself making and freezing applesauce in the near future!)

Random Blather

Sorry for no lunch box pictures today. Although it was the final half-day for Jake, the children ate lunch at their usual time instead of having just a snack. Although I plan to pack his lunch more often than not, I wanted him to have the experience of going through the lunch line the first time while it was new to everyone. He had a hot dog, chips, corn, and a granola bar for dessert. I also sent in the form for the afterschool programs. He’s taking the Household Science class I wrote about yesterday, and he also wanted to take a one-off – “Sugar Cube Houses,” so that will be fun. (Secretly I’m pushing him toward a career in molecular gastronomy! After all, his two favorite things are anything science-related and anything food-related. It only makes sense.)

Today is the first time I’ve participated in Wine Blogging Wednesday. Naturally, I wrote my post for Celebrate Wine. I wrote about the MontGras Reserva Carmenère 2004, which is a wine I really like, so check it out if you’re curious! I’m a big fan of Chilean wines. They tend to be really good values too, in case you are budget-conscious.

Not much else going on today. Tomorrow Jacob has no school in honor of Rosh Hashanah (happy New Year to anyone who is celebrating!), so maybe we’ll go out and do something. My house is still a disaster. This weekend we absolutely *have* to finish moving furniture around and getting closets squared away. I can’t take the mess any longer!

And last, but certainly not least, if you haven’t already go and wish my good friend Lisanne a very happy birthday today! She’s one of the nicest, most genuine, and good-hearted people I know and I am so lucky to have her as friend. Lots of birthday hugs & kisses to her!

A Rainy Day Lunchbox

Kindergarten Lunch #2 The boy is absolutely starving when he gets home from school, so even though this seems like a lot, I am pretty sure he’ll eat almost all of it. Maybe not the frozen peas, but we’re on a "try new veggies" kick. My friend Kelly *loves* eating frozen peas, so I thought that maybe Jake would find that novel, especially since we’re going to see her this weekend. Everything else should be a go: leftover mac & cheese, mandarin oranges, apples, strawberries, cucumbers, and an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie. Easy to throw this one together, PLUS I got to use my wavy cutter.

Kindergarten Lunch #1

Kindergarten Lunch #1 While Jake isn’t doing full-days until later this week, I thought I’d have his lunch ready for him in his lunchbox when he gets home from school for the next couple of days. This gives him practice opening the box, and I’ll make sure I don’t pack too much or too little. (Of course he has a lot more time at home than he’ll have at school, so there still might be tweaking.) At any rate, here we have low-fat pizza bites (chicken & pepperoni), baby carrots & baby spinach with Ranch dip), apples with a marachino cherry face, and for dessert, a few animal crackers sprinkled with a bit of candy corn.

Cruel and Unusual Punishment

This week both Drew and I have commited ourselves to giving The South Beach Diet a good, honest try. After a lot of reading, research, and talking to people I know who are also on it, I decided that it really does seem right for me, especially after reading about a segment on the “Today” show about the waist-to-hip ratio. Mine was high enough to actually get me worried. I’m not terribly overweight, but I do carry all of my “extra baggage” in my tummy and hip area. And due to family history of diabetes and high blood pressure and yadda yadda yadda, I’m doing this just as much for my health in the long run as I am to lose these 15 freaking pounds.

Of course, I am a wine blogger, and as such I interact with other wine bloggers and read their sites and know what they are drinking. It’s a great way to get reccomendations. Except for during the first two weeks of SB. Because I’m not allowed to drink wine. It’s only two weeks and if I wasn’t reading these blogs it probably wouldn’t phase me as much, but honestly my mouth is watering at the thought of Kanonkop Pinotage right now after reading about it on two different blogs. I will really be looking forward to a glass of Cabernet on Day 15, I assure you.

I suppose I might want to temporarily stop reading Slashfood while I’m at it. That’s not going to help me either!

But all that aside, so far it’s going well. I’m only two days in so really — what can you tell from that? But I’m not feeling deprived, I’m enjoying awesome, healthy food, and I even discovered that I like V8!

Floot Loops

floot.jpg Over a year ago, I was introduced to this product called Floot. Basically, it’s sparkling wine in a can. An adult juice box, if you will. Although the packaging is cute, and the idea of a highly portable sparkling wine is compelling, I had a hard time getting past the idea that I was either going to be daintily sipping this through a straw, or else chugging it like a frat boy at a kegger. (I opted to use the straw, by the way).

At any rate, I thought it was terrible. It was like they carbonated some Franzia chablis. Somehow this little product found its way into a few consumer magazines, and lately I started to second guess myself. Was it really that bad?

So today I decided to try it again. And yes. Yes, it was that bad. It retails for about $3.99 a can (or $15.99 for a four-pack). At that price, I’d rather forgo the convenience of the single-serve container and buy two bottles a bottle of Cristalino (a yummy Cava) or my favorite Prosecco — Filipetti. Both of those bottles go for around $9 and are infinitely better.

In a way it’s too bad because I like the idea — this is perfect for outdoor concerts or venues where glass is not allowed — but the product doesn’t deliver. I’ll keep my eye out, though and let you know if something else comes along.

No Stinky Celeb Wine, Whew!

I’ve been kind of fascinated by the whole Jolie-Pitt buying a vineyard thing. I am not a fan of either one of them, so if they did indeed buy wine property in France I wanted to know what it was so I could avoid it. Well, never fear! They’re not going to be crushing grapes anytime soon. From Decanter:

The Hollywood stars visited Chateau Val Joanis, in the Luberon region north of Aix-en-Provence, last Wednesday, prompting reports on several websites that the couple were planning to buy the property.

However a spokesperson for the 186ha estate said that they had no intention of buying.

‘They visited the chateau and found it very pretty,’ said the spokeswoman. ‘But there’s no truth in the rumour that they wanted to buy it.’

I know my husband will be devastated over this news. Somehow I imagine he’ll carry on and find a way to continue to appreciate fine wine.

And yet another reason I love the French: they, too, seem to dislike the Hollywood darlings. From the National Ledger:

It appears that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie didn’t make many friends in France during their last trip. Besides fighting among themselves it appears that they are now branching out and battling with the locals, specifically one owner of a luxury French chateau. The report claims that Brangelina brought in a helicopter to survey his property and he was not happy as they didn’t have permission.

One of the owners reportedly fumed: “It was almost like an invasion – Brad Pitt thinks he’s God.” He told the visitors to hover off after a member of the entourage asked if they could all look round the property.

I bet Jerry Lewis never acted that way!

Birthdays!

Next week both of my boys will be having their birthdays. How did hat happen? Jake will be five. Five!!! Noah will be two. Just crazy to think about that. When did I get old enough to be the mother of a kindergartener? (Though I’m one of the youngest moms I know around here, so at least there’s that.)

Anyway, we’re not doing a big party this year. We’re just having our immediate family over and celebrating low-key. We’re planning on doing a sandwich bar. We’re going to get some of my favorite Santa Fe chicken salad from Balducci’s, and then some other lunch meats. I’m thinking probably roast beef, sundried tomato and rosemary ham, and salami. I have yet to delegate dishes out to my mom and mother-in-law, but I know what I’ll be asking them to bring, so that’s easy. I’m probably going to make spinach-artichoke dip for an appetizer and then Jake requested these (non-alcoholic, obviously) pina colada slushes that he saw in one of my “Simple & Delicious” magazines. In that same issue he saw a chocolate-cherry ice cream pie and he requested I make that instead of a birthday cake. I showed the picture to Noah who yelled, “Mmm-mm! YUMMY!” while rubbing his tummy, so I think he’s okay with it too. It’s actually way easier than a cake so I’m happy about that!

I probably should start making my lists because time does tend to sneak up on me lately. Their birthdays unofficially signify the end of summer for me because after I gave birth to them, before I knew it, it was the end of September. You parents in the reading audience know how quickly those newborn days fly by. And with Jake going to school starting in September, I’m sure the time is just going to go even faster.
