knitting & crochet 2009

I didn’t get to most of the projects I’d wanted to do this year, but looking back, seems that I still got quite a bit done! This year I taught myself to crochet and sew and I’m looking forward to attempting some more challenging projects in the new year. But indulge me as I look back on my knitting and crochet projects.

chilly hudson valley

chilly hudson valley

It’s another very cold, very late-autumn afternoon here in the Hudson Valley. Although it certainly looks like winter, we’re not there yet. I’ve finalized the shopping list for our party this weekend and we’re in good shape. I think we need a new filter for our refrigerator, though. I’m not sure if it’s a MWF filter or some other I kind (I need to check the manual, obviously), but that should get replaced soon (though doubtful before Saturday). The only thing left to do is a quick sweep and mop of the floors and boxing up some toys. Because I’m not sure when people will be arriving and there will be children of various ages, I’m not taking any chances with toys getting broken or eaten. (Or my Christmas tree getting taken down by a light saber!). So I’ve explained to the boys why some things will disappear for a day or two and they’re cool with it.

Drew’s set up an area in the basement where the kids can play. We’ll have Christmas movies, a selection of toys, and I’ll get some Christmas coloring sheets or some activity that’s easy to do. I’m realizing that it’s much easier to manage the little ones on the guest list when you can let them run around outside, LOL! It’ll be fine, though.

Otherwise things are just rolling along. Drew and I watched Angels & Demons the other night and I thought it was good. I read the book years ago and don’t remember much so I can’t really say how they compare. I’ve also made it through Chapter One of Julie & Julia. I tried to go at it with an open mind. Really, I did. But she doesn’t exactly come across as very likable so I’m having a hard time getting into the book. I mean, when someone writes (about supposedly being found curled up with a copy of the Atlantic Monthly at age five), “I think the point behind this was that I’d been singled out as an early entrant to the ranks of the intellectually superior,” it’s hard to take her seriously. I suppose she meant that tongue-in-cheek, but… really, I doubt it. I’ll force myself to read a bit more before I return it to the library. Just not really my cup of tea.

Speaking of tea (how’s that for a segue?)… I picked up some of Harney & Sons’ Hot Cinnamon Spice. Ooooh, it’s so good! I also have a small tin of their Christmas tea that I haven’t tried yet. Maybe tonight. I’m also on the lookout for a new knitting or crochet project. I really should make hats, you know, but… I think I also have to start a scarf or something that is a little more challenging. What’s on your needles at the moment?

feeling hooky

Ah, yesterday I mailed out the last pumpkin hat I’d promised to a friend. While they were fun, I am so done with pumpkins for a while, LOL! I’m still on hats, though. Last winter I’d promised both my dad and my husband winter hats. I’m not fooled by this weekend’s warmer temperatures; I know winter is well on the way (in fact it should be in the 40s later this week — eek!). So my plan is to crank through hats and hand warmers and then hopefully, hopefully start on a new project. I still would like to knit Colonnade or some other shawl, or a scarf with an interesting pattern. I’ve not yet decided.

Last week I requested several crochet books from the library for inspiration and they all arrived on Saturday. Mom and I had lots of fun looking through them and getting ideas. Here are a few projects that I just love. The first two are from Special Techniques & Stiches in Crochet, edited by Judy Crow.

I am thinking that this might be the pattern for my next ripple blanket. I’m not sure about colors yet, but I just love how this looks:

And this sweater! It’s so simple, but so classic, I think. In college I had a silk sweater that was very similar so maybe that’s why I like this so much:

Then there’s this beautiful lacy scarf. This scarf and the following shawl are from the book Wrapped in Crochet: Scarves, Wraps & Shawls by Kristin Omdahl. I think that right now this gorgeous scarf is out of my skill set, but that’s OK. It’s still pretty to look at:

Last, there’s this shawl. It doesn’t seem very useful. I mean, how warm can it keep your shoulders? But I just think it looks so cool. It reminds me of spiderwebs. Maybe I can finish it in time for next Halloween? 🙂

Too many projects, and too little time! Isn’t that always the way?

attic24 bag ta-dah!

Wow, I can’t believe how long it took me to finish this. What should have been a relatively quick project took over three months. But I’ve finished it and I’m pretty happy with my attic24 bag. Noah seems to like it a great deal. He tried to sneak off with it and use it to store some Hot Wheels cars, but no — this is my new project bag.

I altered the pattern slightly by crocheting two decrease rows before the scallop edging. I wanted the bag to go back in a little bit. I think one row would have been sufficient, looking back on it. If I do another one, I’ll also not make the bottom so large. This makes a very B-I-G bag. But now I can focus on some smaller projects:

ready for the next project

… a few more pumpkin hats for some sweet little babies with cold heads! Then winter hats for my dad and Drew, some fingerless mitts for myself, and oh yes I still plan to cast on for Colonnade. Hopefully I can breeze through the hats because I’m really itching to switch back to knitting and start working on this shawl.

what a week

Is it Friday? Already? And yet in a way this has seemed like a very long week at the same time. It’s been a difficult one, but is happily ending on a positive note. My husband’s aunt has been in the ICU all week and had emergency heart surgery on Wednesday. What started off as “nothing” at the ER on Sunday night turned out to be an aorta aneurysm. Actually it’s the same thing that killed John Ritter only we were a little more lucky and instead of bursting right away, it started with a tear. She’d been experiencing fatigue and early Monday morning, the pressure on the trachea led to loss of oxygen and heart failure. It wasn’t until Tuesday when they discovered what the problem was. Those hours of uncertainty were scary, to say the least.

She’d already had heart surgery once (about 12 years ago), but I am happy to say that she is now doing “very well.” There were quite a few other issues with her heart that needed to be repaired, but she is at an excellent hospital and they’ve taken great care of her. She woke up early this morning and was able to let the nurse know that she was not in pain. They expect to remove the breathing tube today, so that is a very good sign. They were being very cautious with that and did not want to take it out prematurely. I just want to send a sincere thank you to all of my friends who have been thinking of and praying for her. I am convinced that they worked. She will be recovering for several days of course, but all signs are good and hopefully they’ll stay that way.

So I will not be attending Sheep & Wool tomorrow after all, since Drew wants to be at the hospital with his mom in the morning. It’s just as well, probably, because I have a horrid cough and it’s supposed to be cold and wet this weekend. It wouldn’t be smart for me to walk around in that and get myself sicker. Instead I think I’ll build a fire in the wood stove, bake some Halloween brownies with the boys and (hopefully) finish the flowers and sew up everything on my Attic24 bag, work on a pumpkin hat for my cousin’s little girl, and cast on for Colonnade. If I really get itchy to buy yarn, I have a gift card for WEBS that I got for Mother’s Day. I can always browse online. Not quite the same, but… You have to work with what you’ve got 🙂

And in other news… It’s snowing. In mid-October. For real. At least it’s not sticking!

pumpkin beanie

crochet pumpkin hat

This was such a quick and gratifying project. Too bad it is too small for Laura! But no worries — it should be the perfect size for my newborn niece, who is due in early November. I think pumpkins are acceptable until shortly after Thanksgiving 🙂 I’ll make another larger hat for Laura and for her cousin Jillie. I offered to make one for Noah, but I think he’s outgrown the age of fruit-inspired hats. He thought I was a little crazy.

Pattern: Baby Pumpkin Crochet Beanie
Yarn: Vanna’s Choice in terracotta and olive (this is soooo soft for an acrylic — I really like working with it!)

Saturday Chit-Chat

hostaAh, the weekend! I know people say that once you have kids all the days are the same, and to an extent that’s true I guess. But to me there is still just something special about the weekend 🙂 Today is gorgeous outside! A little humid, maybe, but the sun is shining and it’s not terribly hot. Though man — did we get some serious rain storms last night! It was like a monsoon out there with the wind and all.

What are you all doing this weekend? This afternoon we’re going to a birthday party at a nearby park. Go figure, I’ve never been there, so it’ll be fun to check out a new place. There’s a swimming lake there so if it’s nice, that might be something to do on warmer days. We shall see. Other than that, I plan to work on addressing Laura’s birth announcements. She’s 6 weeks old and so I feel awful that I don’t have them mailed out already. Oh well. They’re very cute, though!

Maybe tomorrow I’ll make another attempt at grilled pizza. The last time I tried this, the pizza didn’t come out so good. My crochet bag is coming along well. The boys both love it because it’s so colorful. Noah said, “Wow, your bag is mega pretty!” LOL!

I guess that’s about it. Time to start thinking about lunch. I think I’ll have some of the leftover slow cooker fried chicken drumsticks I made the other day. The flavor is fantastic! But they weren’t very crispy. Maybe a warm-up in the toaster oven will help. I really liked them and so did Jake. Drew didn’t try them (he’s not crazy about meat on a bone) and Noah ate them, but with much coercion. Anyhow… have a great day!

The days just fly…

I keep meaning to be a better blogger, and I honestly don’t know what happens, but it seems I just never quite get around to it. Summer is just flying by, as it often does. July has been beautiful here weather-wise. Cool nights (sometimes dipping into the 40s!) and days that reach the high 70’s or low 80’s. I think I could live with a year of this! Of course, I’m sure we’ll be in for the dreaded heat and humidity eventually. Let’s see, what’s been going on? The house is nearly all stained! I am just in love with the color. Here’s a shot I took this morning:

stain going up on house

And here’s one just of two of the dormers. You can see how faded the siding was! Granted, the new stain is a redder shade than the old one, but still… the house was never that light!

old & busted | new hotness

My dining room is nearly back in order. There still are some things to put away, but at least it’s not jam-packed anymore. I think I might even be able to see a little bit of the surface of the dining room table! 🙂 The boys’ rooms are all decorated and basically finished. Laura’s room is getting there, and our room will just have to wait. Although I am very excited about my new sewing desk in our room! It’s actually the desk that used to be in the kitchen, but we’ve been rearranging furniture and found it a new home. I hated having the sewing machine on the dining room table, yet I hated putting it in the box every night, too. This should be great!

I’m still working on this crochet bag from Attic24. I haven’t had tons of craft time lately (understandably, I would think!), but it’s working up nicely. I’m excited to do a little more on it. Other than that, it’s just business as usual here! Diapers and dishes, LOL. I’ll leave you with a recipe I tried last week for Indian Spiced Kale & Chick Peas. While I like kale well enough, I don’t love it. If we didn’t get it from our CSA I probably would not go out of my way to buy it, but this recipe was a good use for it. I used less kale than the recipe called for and should have cut down on the broth accordingly. It made for a more soupy dish. I’m not sure if I’d make it again, but if you enjoy kale and Indian flavors, chances are you will love this!

Indian Spiced Kale & Chick Peas

indian spiced kale & chick peas

1 Tbsp. olive oil
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 pound kale, ribs removed, coarsely chopped
1 cup reduced-sodium chicken broth or vegetable broth
1 tsp. ground coriander
1/2 tsp. ground cumin
1/4 tsp. garam masala
1/4 tsp. salt
1 15-ounce can chickpeas, rinsed

Heat oil in a Dutch oven over medium heat. Add garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add kale and cook, tossing with two large spoons, until bright green, about 1 minute. Add broth, coriander, cumin, garam masala and salt. Cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until the kale is tender, 8 to 10 minutes. Stir in chickpeas; cover and cook until the chickpeas are heated through, 1 to 2 minutes.

Sometimes It’s Nice…

It’s a well-documented fact that I am, for the most part, a morning person. I was up extra early this morning (one of the perils of falling asleep around 8:30, I suppose) and I’m really enjoying the dim light, the quiet sound of rain outside, and my cup of tea without the noise of the TV or anyone calling for me. 🙂

Things are good. Life is good. Time is just rolling along, as I expected it would. The last couple weeks have been busy, busy and here we are, less than a week away from baby girl’s arrival! I figured I’d make this a random sort of entry, hitting on all the things going on. I hope I don’t miss anything!

Shed Dormer Construction
The dormer/upstairs reno is moving along nicely and on schedule! There are updated photos here. Everything is framed in, and yesterday was the framing inspection which was fine. Today I believe the electrician is coming to work on some things and insulation will be put in. If my timeline is correct, Monday will be the insulation inspection and then they will sheetrock everything and finish up. The only inspection left will be for Certificate of Occupancy! We’ve chosen the stain color for the house (similar to our old stain, but a bit more brown) and we have a general idea of carpet colors (a shade of grey for the kids’ rooms and the hallway, and blue for our bedroom). As for paint colors… we’re going with a shade of brown for our room, a very (very) light purple for the baby’s room, and once we get paint chips we’ll work with the boys to help them decide. I’m just so thrilled with this project. The upstairs already looks a million times better! Yes, it’s a lot of money, but in our opinion it’s well worth it. Let’s face it: with three little kids there’s no way we’re going to be jetting off to Europe or looking into Caribbean cruises anytime in the near future. As a “homebody” I would so much rather make our house extra comfy and cozy! This was without a doubt the right thing for us.

Pregnancy
Tomorrow I hit the 39 week mark! Yesterday was my last scheduled OB appointment, and I was in and out as usual. I’ve gained 23 lbs. with this pregnancy, which I know is just fine, but… let’s just hope it all comes off quick! I’ve been so lucky that my only real “problem” has been some back pain of late. My C-section is scheduled for next Wednesday. My OB believes that there are only two C-sections that day, so I’ll need to head to the hospital for either 6 or 7 a.m. and they’ll operate at either 8 or 9 a.m., depending on who is first. My parents are coming down on Tuesday night to get the boys ready in the morning and get Jake on the bus and then take Noah to the hospital after the baby is born. Then he’s going on a “vacation” at their house until Saturday. (Thank you, once again!) Drew’s mom and aunt will be coming up in the afternoon to get Jake off the bus and take him to meet his little sister! One or both of them is also going to be available in case I need Drew to spend the night at the hospital. That one we’ll play by ear. Everything is lined up, and I’m really not concerned about going into labor early. She still feels pretty high up and I’ve been taking it easy the last few days.

Crafting
I’ve not done much in the way of crafting lately. My attention span is so short, and my stuff is boxed up for the most part. I did cast on for the Sarena shrug, which I’ll bring as my  “hospital knitting” since it’s easy and mindless. I’ve also been whipping up little crochet flowers to use up scraps of dishcloth yarn. So easy and cute, see?

crochet tawashi flowers

I’m looking forward to getting back to sewing once our house is back in order! But for now, all those projects have been set aside. It won’t be much longer, though.

Family
The boys are great! Noah cracks me up on a daily basis. He’s really into Hot Wheels Trick Tracks at the moment. He sets up the loop and the curve and various dino launchers and sees which cars work best. Totally cute. He’s also obsessed with the ABC Song, which I find funny since he refused to count or say his alphabet until very recently. He knew it, but he wouldn’t perform. My independant little guy 🙂

Jake is good, too. School ends here at the end of June, but they are already winding things down a bit, probably because the kids’ are getting antsy. His class is doing a little play, “The Carrot Seed” in a couple weeks, and there’s Field Day and lots of other stuff. He’s still majorly into arts and crafts as well as writing stories and making books. The other day he decided to make a list of all the different fish he could think of:

Jake's list of fish

Well, I finally hear the boys stirring, and this is certainly long enough! Have a great weekend, everyone!

ripple

ripple afghan

It’s finished! Last night I crocheted the last row and wove in the dozens of ends of my ripple afghan. (It sure beat trying to figure out what to do about the blackheads that have been plaguing me this week — crazy weather is making my skin miserable.) Here are the stats:

Pattern: Easy Ripple Afghan
Started: February 8, 2009
Finished: May 2, 2009
Yarn: Berella 4 Acrylic Yarn
Hook: Size H

I haven’t measured it, so I’m not sure of the size, but it’s a decent sized lap blanket, perfect for rainy days like today! It took me a little while to get the hang of the pattern, but once I did it was really fast and easy. If I had crocheted every night, this would have been completed a lot faster. I’m really looking forward to starting another blanket using this same pattern, but with brighter, more fun colors (possibly a baby blanket for one of the upcoming babies in our family aside from mine 🙂
