First Sewing Project: A Crayon Roll!

Noah really likes it :-)As I mentioned a few posts ago, my sewing machine arrived late last week and I was really looking forward to setting it up over the weekend. I practiced a few stitches but didn’t dive into any projects. However, I did bookmark a couple dozen ideas for future use! For my first project, I decided to make a crayon roll. Currently I keep crayons in a baggie in my purse for when we are out with the kids. Utilitarian? Yes. Cute? No. So this was something I could use, and basically it’s all sewing straight lines. I’m a real learn-by-doing person. I don’t bother with classes because even when I take them, I usually have to re-learn everything by myself when I make mistakes. So this project took me all afternoon, but I think in the future it would be much faster!Β It was made simple by the fantastic tutorial at Chocolate on my Cranium It’s not perfect, of course, but considering I had never done any kind of sewing before, I’m happy with it and encouraged to try more projects! The tutorial spells out everything really well. I highly recommend it if you’re interested in making one of these crayon rolls! And now, on to the pictures!

All rolled up! Jake picked out the pirate fabric the other day, but didn’t know my plans:
crayon roll, all rolled up!

The outside, opened flat:

The inside, with crayons:

These would make adorable (and frugal!) last-minute gifts or stocking stuffers. I’ve also been thinking that I’d like some labels for when I do my crafts. Ordering personalized labels can be expensive. I suppose I could buy sheets of iron-on paper and print out my own, but then I thought that maybe I could order a custom rubber stamp. Then I could stamp on twill tape with Staz-On ink in whatever color I want and not have extra labels that are just bound to get lost. I might look into that.

For some future projects I have been thinking about bibs, a changing pad, and burp cloths. With three babies in my family this year (me, my cousin, and my sister-in-law!), I’ll have plenty of opportunity to make stuff!

In Like a Lion

thinking spring...When they say that March comes in like a lion, I always thought they were referring to the weather, but things around here have been non-stop since the beginning of the month! Hopefully life, too, will slow down and the month will wind down “like a lamb.” We started the week with Noah getting sick on Sunday night. Jake had some kind of stomach bug on Friday and poor Noah caught it. Monday Drew was off to Virginia for a couple days for work. Tuesday I ran what seemed like a million errands. I got the results of my glucose screen (which were normal) and was told I’m slightly anemic and I should pick up some iron supplements. Then Wednesday… ugh. I woke up not feeling well but wondered if my stomach pain was somehow due to the iron pills. I thought maybe it was just too much all at once. As the day wore on, however, it was clear that I was getting what the boys had. Meanwhile, Drew was trying to get home from Norfolk and there were massive delays in Philadelphia (where he had a layover), so I was trying to track flight information at the same time. Not so fun.

At any rate, thankfully Drew was able to get home on Wednesday night and just slightly later than his original flight! I was camped out on the couch feeling pretty awful, but I was so glad he was home. Yesterday I woke up feeling better, though still achy and weak so I took it easy most of the day. I had an OB check-up in the morning and that was fine. I was told that I’m actually just borderline anemic, and it will probably correct itself within a few weeks. She gave me the full medical explanation, but I won’t bore you with it! I only have to take the iron pill twice a week for an extra boost, so that’s good.

Last night we went to the Scholastic Book Fair and ice cream social at Jake’s school. He picked out a Goosebumps book which might be slightly above his reading level, but I’m sure if he just takes his time he’ll have no problem. He’s an excellent reader and zips through the chapter books he gets for homework. This one will take him a little longer, but it’s good to learn patience πŸ™‚ Drew also suggested a Phineas and Ferb book that he’ll read to both Jake and Noah at night. Have you ever watched that cartoon? It is so cute! I love Perry the Platypus. Then we all had sundaes and headed home.

Today I’ve been cleaning the house since it’s been neglected all week. Drew’s brother and his girlfriend are visiting us this weekend so I want to make sure there aren’t many dust bunnies hiding out in the corners of our wood flooring, LOL! I’ve hardly done any cooking this week and today is no exception. I made scrambled eggs for lunch and we’ll have tuna melts (my go-to meatless Lenten meal) for dinner. (The boys will probably have mac & cheese since neither like tuna!). Not very exciting, I know.

I’ve been crocheting up a storm! I finished a hat for Drew, some slippers for myself, and a few flowers (photos to come, I promise!). I’m learning, though, that some things (like hats) might be better left for knitting. The hat I made for him is pretty big and not very snug/stretchy. But it’ll be OK. I will be knitting him a snugger watchcap at some point, though.

I’m also very excited to play with my new toy — I finally broke down and ordered a sewing machine last week! Drew and I had a tax refund deal. He purchased some new equipment for his home studio and encouraged me to finally get myself a sewing machine. As a beginning sewer, I didn’t want to shell out a whole lot of money, and I wanted something fairly simple to operate. Thanks to some friends’ suggestions as well as my own research, I decided on the Brother XL-2610. I am really excited about it!

And that’s the haps here. Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

Easy Ripple Afghan

Sunday I started crocheting the Easy Ripple Afghan and I am really pleased with how it’s coming along! It’s totally a coincidence that the colors I’m using are the same as the photo shown on the pattern page:

The lighting in my living room wasn’t the greatest, but I’m using black, sage green, cream, olive, and then taupe before the color pattern will repeat. I’ve always liked these blankets and had no idea how easy they were to make! I cast-on (err… chained I guess) 130 stitches, which will make this a good size for a lap blanket:

This one will probably go on the back of my rocking chair, but I’d like to make a larger one at some point for our couch. I bought the yarn a few months ago. I’d planned on knitting a bunch of squares and then piecing them together in a checkerboard-type pattern, but just one square seemed to be taking forever. In two days I’ve already made more progress with crochet. Anyway, just a quick update! And many thanks to Sara and Wendy for so quickly answering my questions over the weekend. You guys are great!

Oh, Crock Pot, is There Anything You Can’t Do?

Last week I discovered an awesome new blog called A Year of CrockPotting. Stephanie has vowed to, that’s right, use her Crock Pot every day for a year. I love how honest she is with her hits and misses. She has a lot of really great recipes (like these brownie mugs that I am totally making on Sunday!) and I can’t wait to make some of them. But the other day she showed us what else you can do with your slow cooker: make Shrinky Dinks!!! How cool is this? I actually have two packages of Shrinky Dinks in the closet that we gave Jake a long time ago. (I keep forgetting about them.) Using the Crock Pot instead of the stove seems much safer, as well as more fun. Next rainy weekend day, I know what I am doing with the boys. Check it out!

And the winner is….

Aren’t you all lucky that Noah decided to wake up at 5 this morning? LOL! After I get him settled with some chocolate milk, I headed over to the Random Interger Generator to pick a number between 1 and 52. Before I announce the winner, can I just tell you how overwhelmed I was by the response to my little contest? Wow! The best part for me has been discovering a whole bunch of great new blogs to add to my reads. I am really excited about that! I wish I could send each and every one of you something, I really do.

OK, I have kept you in suspense for long enough. The lucky number is 16, and the 16th commenter was Elise from Nest Sweet Nest! Congratulations! I will be e-mailing you for your address, so look for that πŸ™‚

Thank you all for entering. Please come back and visit! I will be sure to stop by your blogs too πŸ™‚

Sneezing My Way Through The Day

Ah yes… the first cold of the season. It hit me yesterday πŸ™ Actually, Tuesday night I started to feel under the weather and had a terribly sore throat, and when I woke up well… it was downhill from there. But my amazing husband did all the cooking and offered to watch Noah so I could make a run to Shop Rite. I didn’t really feel like it, but there were a couple really amazing sales I wanted to take advantage of before the weekend. I went to bed early last night and I feel a bit better today. I am still sniffly and not on top of my game, but I’m in much better shape than yesterday! So how about a bullet list of what is new at Chez Carol? πŸ™‚

  • Today is Jake’s open house at school. He absolutely loves 1st grade and Drew and I have really noticed a change from last year. Maybe it’s because a few, er, “excitable” children are in a different class this year. But he is calmer and seems more focussed, so that’s great. Hopefully there won’t be any surprises from his teacher!
  • This weekend I am hoping we can all go and pick apples and raspberries at Greig Farm. I’ve got a baking itch that only apple crisp can scratch!
  • Drew has laid out the bluestone hearth for our wood stove and it is going to look so nice! Just a couple weeks until it is installed. I can’t wait.
  • Which reminds me that I need to order our sectional soon. We saw a very cool one that has built-in cup holders and recliners, but we’re not really looking for home theater seating, LOL. My style is a little more traditional. The one we’re getting is a sage green and has a chaise on one side. Oh, it’s going to be so wonderful in the winter to curl up with an afghan, the fire going in the wood stove, a cup of tea or cocoa, all while knitting or reading a good book! Anyone want to join me?
  • Speaking of books, I have let my curiosity get the best of me and I reserved a copy of Twilight by Stephenie Mayer. I first heard about it over on Sandra’s blog and then my friend e-mailed telling me that I HAD to read them. (She and I were voracious V.C. Andrews fans back in middle and high school!). Of course, there are something like 75 holds for the book in the Mid-Hudson system so it might be a while, LOL!

I guess that is about it. Oh, before I forget, today is the last day for my Holiday Giveaway! And a special hello to anyone finding their way over here from Monica’s wonderful blog, The Homespun Heart! She is writing a wonderful series on Christmas crafts and I am going to make the felted dryer balls she wrote about today.

Well, off to get some ironing done!

Holiday Giveaway!

There are 106 days until Christmas, and I seriously need to get going on my crafting! I hope you all are doing better than I am. But for those who need some inspiration, I am having a fun little knitting-themed giveaway. The winner will get a copy of Handknit Holidays: Knitting Year-Round for Christmas, Hanukkah, and Winter Solstice by Melanie Falick and Susan Pittard. I am also including some yarn from my stash: 2 skeins of Patons SWS in Natural Navy; 1 hank of Inca Alpaca, 1 skein of KnitPicks Andean Silk Twist in Sunset, and 1 hank of Knitpicks Shadow in Redwood Forest.

To enter the giveaway, simply comment on this entry between now and Thursday the 11th. (It is important to leave a real e-mail address, otherwise I can’t get your information to mail out your package!) I will pick a commenter at random on Friday morning and hopefully start someone’s weekend on a happy note πŸ™‚.

Good luck, everyone!

Christmas Giveway… coming soon!

I recently had a little giveaway on my wine blog and I am planning a holiday-themed giveaway right here this week! No, it’s not too early to start thinking about Christmas. Again, we have most of our shopping done for the boys, but I know I will still enjoy perusing the Black Friday ads on Thanksgiving night. I usually find at least a couple deals worth getting up at 4:30 AM for πŸ™‚ But I also am hoping to make a few gifts this year. While I obviously won’t yet say what the giveaway is going to be, I will let you know that you crafty ladies might be interested! So check back on Tuesday morning!

Beautiful Notecards Made by a Beautiful Friend!

DSC_0118The other day I received this beautiful notecard in the mail — it was a lovely note from my friend Lisanne. The photo looked familiar to me and it dawned on me that it was a photo she had taken. Well, as it turns out, Miss Lisanne has started to make these notecards out of her original photographs! Her Etsy shop is called Shining Moments Fine Art Stationery I have always loved snail-mail. In fact I started writing to my first pen-pal when I was in second grade. I’ve lost touch with her, unfortunately, but I am still very good friends with a girl I became pen-pals with in 7th grade. We even attended each others’ weddings!

I hope you’ll take a moment and check out Lisanne’s cards. It would be wonderful if she could make enough money to start saving for European cruises, don’t you think? πŸ™‚ Or at the very least, some fun spending money!

Lap Books

Although Jake’s last day of school isn’t until the 26th, I’m trying to get some activities together that we can do over the summer. One thing that I thought would be fun is doing a few lapbooks. I had never heard of these until I saw them mentioned on a blog by a homeschooling friend, and I couldn’t believe how cool they are! I wish I had known about them when I was really into paper crafts a few years ago, because they (can) use a lot of cool paper folding techniques. I think this will be a great way to get Jake to continue working on his reading and writing, plus incorporate his interests. For example, the last few times he went to the school library, he was checking out books about parrots and toucans, so I thought it might be cool to do a lapbook on rainforests for our first one. We’ll go to the library and check out some Amazon books, print out some pictures that we find online, and put together a really neat book that he’ll enjoy looking at because he made it himself! I was looking at photos of finished lapbooks on Flickr and he was really excited about them, so I think this is a project we’re both looking forward to. Have any of you ever done lapbooks with your kids?
