Super Savings Saturday

cvsloot.jpgThis week I learned a valuable lesson about carefully following the flyer and comparing it to the stock on the shelves. In my defense, I was shopping at a different CVS that I never visit, but still. I messed up on the Oral B toothbrush deal this week and didn’t realize that I never got my ECBs until I was going over my receipts. I purchased the wrong one. Oh well. I still had a B1G1 coupon and hey – now we’ve got vibrating toothbrushes! LOL… I’ll chalk it up to experience. And I guess on the bright side, I can still get the monthly Oral B deal too if I want. Anyway! Here were my deals for the week:

Still, I can’t complain. I now have $24.97 to spend at CVS on upcoming sales and there are some good deals in the near future (check out the forums at SlickDeals if you want to get a leg up). I also am really glad I decided to try out the Glade Wisp flameless candle because I really like it! The vanilla smells really good and the flickering light really does look like a candle. Every time I try to light candles in the house, Noah wants to blow them out, so this is perfect. (Plus, no soot!)

{Recipe} No-Bake Easter Nest Cookies

Easter Nests

With Easter just on the way, I thought I’d share my favorite Easter cookie recipe with you. My good friend Kelly used to always bring back some of these delicious cookies after Easter break and we’d enjoy them with a cup of tea as we watched TV in our dorm room. They’re great to make with kids, too because it’s a no-bake recipe (and it’s messy, so naturally it’s fun!). Be sure to store extras in your refrigerator, otherwise the marshmallow will get too melty and goopy.

I hope you enjoy!

My Plans for CVS

I swear CVS is like an addiction! I just love putting together deal scenarios based on my coupons and the sales in the flyer. I wonder if they have something like drug rehabilitation for CVS shoppers, LOL! Anyway, I plan on going tomorrow night and here’s what I’m looking at purchasing:

1 Venus Embrace razor $9.99 ($6.00 ECB)
1 Gillette Fusion razor $9.99 ($6.00 ECB)
1 Colgate toothpaste $2.99 ($2.99 ECB)
1 Crest Pro-Health $3.49 ($3.49 ECB)
1 Glade Wisp $9.99 ($2.00 ECB)
1 Gilette Mach 3 $7.99 ($5.00 ECB)
2 Oral B Cross Action $9.98 ($9.98 ECB)

1 Gilette Mach 3 ($3.00)
1 Oral B Cross Action (B1G1) ($4.99)

CVS $/$$ or CRT ($5.00)

GRAND TOTAL OOP $20.44

Plus, I have a rebate form for the OralB Cross Action toothbrush. I’m not sure if it will work because I think it’s Drugstore.com rebate, and I’m purchasing it at CVS, but I figure what the heck — I’ll see what happens. I could probably save a little more if I split this up into a couple transactions since I have a few other $5/$15 coupons printed, but this is a hectic week so one trip will have to suffice. I’m still coming out ahead and the coupons are good through the end of the month. There are also more monthly deals I can do (for example, this will only be the 3rd free toothpaste out of the 5 I’m allowed on my card), and I’m curious about the LypSyl as well, but I like to spread those out during the month, just in case I get other CVS coupons. They are good to fill in. Anyway, if you were looking for a deal idea for the week, there’s one for you. Now let’s just hope I can find everything!

Who Doesn’t Love Zombies?

If you like zombies, you might like this film my friend Shaw made. Shaw and I go way back to like 7th or 8th grade. The film, “Two Minutes To Midnight” is actually very cool. Shaw and his friend entered it in George Romero’s Diary of the Dead contest. Please check out the Diary of the Dead film page on MySpace and give their film a boo-ya vote. If they win, their movie will be included on the DVD release of Diary of the Dead. Come on – it’s not like they’re asking for business funding, just for a vote! Help ’em out! Sure it would be cool for them, but it would also be cool for me. ‘Cuz me and Shaw? We go way back!

Spring Is In The Air

lemons and an orange I know it’s hard to believe, but it’s true — Spring is on the way! Last night at dinner time I just loved the way the sunlight was streaming in through the kitchen window. It felt so warm and promising! And although today is gray and rainy, it’s pretty warm out and the snow is really starting to melt. Ahh, I long for those evenings when I can have a drink on the deck after the boys are in bed. It won’t be long! In the meantime, today really is the perfect day to stay in and keep cozy. I have a Crock Pot of chili cooking away and it smells so good. I’m so looking forward to having a big bowl of that tonight with some cornbread (shh, it’s from a Jiffy mix!). I think we’re going to crack open the bottle of Twisted Oak *%#&@! that I gave Drew for Christmas. I’ve been waiting and waiting to drink it. I’m also thinking of baking Sugar Cookie Cake for dessert. That sounds so good to me today!

Aside from that I just need to take care of some laundry today — easy enough. I should have time to knit, as well. I’ve been doing a lot more projects around the house and just trying to stay home because gas is just so expensive. I think we paid $3.25 the other day (something close to that at least). I’m really trying to consolidate errands and not go anywhere “just to get out” like I used to do. It takes a little getting used to, but I’m pretty much a homebody so it’s not that bad.

We’ve been thinking about replacing the Jeep Liberty soon, and are very interested in the Jeep Patriot. A local dealership has a couple and there’s a nice looking one with just the basic car accessories that Drew is eyeing. We don’t really need “the towing group” or “the music group.” Just your standard stuff will suit us just fine. It gets better mileage than the Liberty, but it’s still 4-wheel drive (which we need living where we do). We’re seriously thinking about it. Maybe once our tax refund comes in…

Hope everyone’s week is off to a good start!

Week’s Eats: 3/2/08

mpm8.jpg This week’s menu is highly subject to chage.

Sunday: Dinner out
Monday: Garlic roasted chicken breasts, steamed veggies
Tuesday: Chili & cornbread
Wednesday: Chicken-fried rice
Thurday: Running errands after school – probably grab take-out
Friday: Tuna melt, soup
Saturday: Cuban pork loin roast, black bean salad

The pork roast recipe is a new one. On the spur of the moment I bought a pork roast that was on sale a few weeks ago. I’ll shred some of the cooked roast for BBQ pulled pork sandwiches to have next week. Here’s the quick recipe from the March “Month of Menus” in Woman’s Day magazine:

Cuban Pork Roast
Rub pork with lime juice, ground cumin, oregano, salt and pepper before roasting.

And the salad to go with it:

Super Easy Black Bean Salad
Toss rinsed, canned black bean, red onion, chopped tomato, diced avacado, and chopped cilantro in oil and vinegar dressing.

Chocolate Strawberry Panini

strawberry and chocolate panini

Ages ago I saw Giada DiLaurentis make a sandwich like this on her program and ever since I’ve wanted to try it. Today I happened to have all the ingredients on hand and wanted to make myself something special to try to forget about the snow for a little while. So I whipped this together.

Delicious!

Here’s the general recipe:

Chocolate Strawberry Panini
— 2 slices of good quality white bread (I used one large slice of Italian bread, cut in half)
— Hazelnut-chocolate spread (such as Nutella)
— Sliced strawberries
— Butter

Butter one side of each slice of bread. On the other side, slather on the chocolate-hazelnut spread. Arrange sliced strawberries on one half. Top with other slice of bread (butter side out). Grill on panini press (I find my Foreman Grill works perfectly fine for paninis).

This is messy to eat, but it’s so good you won’t even care. I promise.

Super Savings Saturday: CVS

cvs229.jpgIt’s been a while since I made a CVS run and when I discovered that I accidentally let $3.00 in ECBs expire, I wanted to make sure I spent the rest of my ECBs which expire in a couple days. That’s money earned! I was so angry that I let some go to waste. But live and learn, right? I did OK, I guess, but I’m sure with a little more time and effort I could have done better. The cotton balls were a mistake. I thought they were buy one/get one half off, but the sign must have been referring to something else. Oh well. I needed them anyway. I also could have taken advantage of the other candy deal in order to get $5 in ECBs, but the Mini Eggs are just so much better! (Of course, when I got the new flyer last week and saw that they will be on sale for 99 cents instead of the $1.88 I paid again I could have kicked myself. Still, the price I paid was a bargain compared to the price at Stop & Shop.) So… I ended up getting 2 bags of cotton balls, 3 bags of Cadbury Mini Eggs (for the boys’ Easter baskets), 2 cans of cashews (a treat for Drew), 1 bottle of hand soap, 1 bottle of shower gel, 1 deodorant (with bonus travel size!), and a card for $4.25 out of pocket. That’s still pretty darn good — probably the regular price of one container of cashews! I got back $2 in ECBs.
