Double-Digits!

25weeks_picnikIt’s hard to believe that I’m just days away from the last trimester! Next Sunday will officially begin my 90-day countdown. I snapped this shot in the hotel mirror while we were on vacation. I figured since I was dressed up, I might as well take advantage! I feel enormous, but everyone keeps telling me that I look small, so who knows? At any rate, I figure now is a good time for me to start looking for good deals on things like diapers and wipes. You know me — I’m always hunting for the best sale! I’d like to have a decent stockpile before June so there won’t be a need to run out to the store because we’re out of diapers.

I’m also starting to think about stocking the freezer with meals to make those first few weeks easier. By the time the baby arrives, our CSA will be in full swing, so I know we’ll have fresh veggies, but now is a good time to start packing away some dinners, snacks, quick breads, etc. I already have the book, Don’t Panic — Dinner’s In the Freezer! and it’s great! I’ve made several of the recipes in there and they’ve all been good. I’m considering getting Don’t Panic–More Dinner’s in the Freezer: A Second Helping of Tasty Meals You Can Make Ahead since the first book is so good. Although I’ve also thought of getting Dream Dinners: Turn Dinner Time Into Family Time with 100 Assemble-And-Freeze Meals. (Dream Dinners is also a chain of prep-your-own-dinner establishments, and the book is written by the women who started the business.) Maybe I’ll just get them both since I do like having meals ready-to-go. I don’t want to waste time, though, because I know the last couple of months fly by and I don’t want to be stuck with nothing to eat, especially since I’ll really have to take it easy after my c-section! Do you have any favorite freezer meals (aside from lasagna and enchiladas)? I’d love to hear what they are!

TV Meme

Considering that I think most of the shows on TV right now are generally awful, this should be an interesting one to complete!

1. Name a TV series in which you have seen every episode at least twice: Arrested Development

2. Name a show you can’t miss: Top Chef. (Sorry, Drew.)

3. Name an actor that would make you more inclined to watch a show: Will Arnett. I’d love to see him in some kind of legal spoof. OMG, imagine him in Washington state in the 90s as a Seattle injury lawyer. Maybe he could get a client who broke a leg crowd surfing, LOL.

4. Name an actor who would make you less likely to watch a show: Angelina Jolie. I just can’t stand her, sorry.

5. Name a show you can, and do, quote from: The Simpsons

6. Name a show you like that no one else enjoys: I guess I’ll say A Haunting. I’m sure there are other people who like it, but I don’t know any.

7. Name a TV show which you’ve been known to sing the theme song: Can’t think of one

8. Name a show you would recommend everyone to watch: Since I primarily watch news shows or documentary-type shows, I doubt anyone would be interested in my recommendations.

9. Name a TV series you own: Veronica Mars

10. Name an actor who launched his/her entertainment career in another medium, but has surprised you with his/her acting choices in television: No idea

11. What is your favorite episode of your favorite series? Wow, that’s a tough question to answer. I don’t think I could pin down just one episode. There are a lot of great Simpsons episodes circa 1995, though. Possibly one of those.

12. Name a show you keep meaning to watch, but you just haven’t gotten around to yet: Can’t really think of one.

13. Ever quit watching a show because it was so bad? Yes, there are several! Scrubs, Grey’s Anatomy… I know they are super popular but I just don’t think they’re very good. (Of course, few people think the shows I like are good, so it all comes full-circle I suppose.)

14. Name a show that’s made you cry multiple times: Probably one of the many mystery diagnosis shows on Discovery or TLC.

15. What do you eat when you watch TV? Nothing.

16. How often do you watch TV? Usually in the evening

17. What’s the last TV show you watched? I guess Wow, Wow, Wubbzy! with Noah

18. What’s your favourite/preferred genre of TV? Smart comedies, news shows, true crime programs.

19. What was the first TV show you were obsessed with? Twin Peaks. I wrote papers on it in college, so I think that certainly qualifies me as “obsessed.”

20. What TV show do you wish you never watched? American Idol. I am totally embarrassed that I watched the first season.

21. What’s the weirdest show you enjoyed? Twin Peaks. I really need to rewatch the series now that we have both seasons on DVD.

22. What TV show scared you the most? A Haunting. I am such a sucker for ghost stories.

23. What is the funniest TV show you have ever watched? Arrested Development. Too bad more people didn’t get it. On the flip side, whenever I find someone who loves the show, there is instant camraderie!

24. What show was cancelled too early? I can’t think of one. My immediate response would be Arrested Development, but really if it went on much longer it would have lost my interest just like The Office is doing right now. Ricky Gervais said something about how he doesn’t like to do more than two seasons of a show, and honestly I think that makes a lot of sense.

Good Morning :-)

home-making-housewivesWell, I’m trying to get back into the swing of a normal routine this week, but the weather doesn’t seem to be cooperating! Yesterday morning the local schools had a two-hour delay because of icy roads. Tomorrow’s forcast is looking rather bleak (a wonderous mix of snow/sleet/rain/freezing rain) and I have a hunch school will be cancelled. We live in a pretty hilly area — in fact, the school is up over a hill — so anytime the conditions look somewhat bad I  just count on school being called off, or at the very least a two-hour delay in the morning.

This morning I need to finish putting away the piles of Christmas gifts. The decorations are all down (oops — except for the wreath on the front door), but the toys are still all in the living room. Poor Noah got a tee-ball type baseball set for the spring and he is just dying to play with it. Considering that there are still a lot of icy spots on the driveway, and the rest of the yard is covered in snow, I think he’d need more safety equipment than just a helmet to help protect against injury! Only seventy-odd days until spring is here. Maybe I’ll get a January thaw. Hey, a girl can dream, can’t she?

Let’s see, what else is new… a week from today is my ultrasound! Everyone is making me crazy asking about it, so there you go 😉 And yes, we are hoping to find out the baby’s gender. I think the grandmothers would go nuts if we made them wait this time. I still have to finish up my Dad’s Christmas present, too. I’m knitting him a wool watchcap, and I knew when I started it I should have just knit it flat instead of in the round. I’m almost to the point where I need to switch to DPNs and I just have a bad feeling about it. Hopefully it will all work out. If not, maybe he can wear it next fall! I also need to mend one of my maternity shirts. Of course it’s my favorite one that I wore all of two times! The hem at the bottom fell out in the wash, so that has to get sewed up. Other than that I have laundry (as usual) and I need to do a quick sweep of the house.

It would be nice to get myself motivated after I finish this entry so this afternoon I can just sit by the wood stove and knit or read. For Christmas, Drew gave me Knit One, Kill Two and A Deadly Yarn, both by Maggie Sefton. Either would be perfect for a cold winter’s afternoon! Well, I need to switch the clothes from the washer to the dryer so that’s my cue… Enjoy your day!

Hudson Valley Holidays

This list is mostly for my reference, but who knows — maybe some other HV’ers will find it useful! This is just a list of free holiday events going on around Dutchess County. I doubt we’ll hit them all, but hopefully we can make one or two.

Sat., Dec. 13, 1-5 PM @ FDR Historic Site – Henry A. Wallace Center (Hyde Park) – Make holiday cards to send to the men & women serving on the USS Franklin & Eleanor Roosevelt. Photos with Santa at no charge. Children’s book fair including HV authors. Live music & entertainment

Sat., Dec. 13, 2-5 PM – Tivoli Winterfest – Tree lighting, music, crafts, activities, Santa, bonfire, fireworks

Mon., Dec. 15, 6 PM – Center For Performing Arts in Rhinebeck – Holiday Entertainment Celebration – Magic songs, Christmas goodies, Santa. (Free w/ donation of a new toy, book, gloves, scarf or hat for a child in need)

Mon., Dec. 22, 7PM – Hyde Park Train Staton – Polar Express Night – Story, crafts, model trains, refreshments, visit from Santa

Plus, of course, all the mansions are decorated for the holidays. From what I’ve seen, they are mostly free unless you want a tour or there is a specific event going on. There’s more in the southern part of the county too, but I don’t usually make it much further than Poughkeepsie. If you know of anything fun, please feel free to mention it!

What A Show!

I hope my fellow U.S. bloggers had a great Thanksgiving! Ours was quiet and a bit subdued. Unfortunately, my MIL’s cousin’s husband passed away on Thanksgiving morning, so that understandably put a bit of a damper on the holiday. He was very sick with Alzheimer’s Disease, but it was still very sad. All of their children were coming down for Thanksgiving anyway, so at least everyone was together. Drew and Jake are going to the wake this afternoon.

On a happier note, we took Jake to see the Radio City Christmas Spectacular on Friday, and spectacular it was! First of all, we had an absolutely perfect day to be walking around Manhattan. It was chilly, but the sun was shining and it wasn’t windy. We got there in plenty of time, but holy cow — I could not believe the line to get in! It was kind of funny to listen to people freaking out about the line as they tried to find the end. It’s not like the show was general admission; we all had reserved seats! So you stand for an extra 10 minutes or so.

The hall itself is just beautiful. It might have been the biggest theatre I’ve ever been in, I’m not sure. The show itself was breathtaking and I couldn’t help but tear up a few times. I’m not exactly sure why, but Drew and I were talking later and he had a similar reaction. Maybe it’s because of all the history… thinking of people who scrimped and saved to take their kids to this show over the years… of how it is so unique to New York. Of course I’ll also bet that pregnancy hormones had something to do with it for me! Jake was transfixed the whole 90 minutes. Hands down, it is one of the best musical shows I have ever seen. The talent of The Rockettes just blew me away. I can’t dance to save my life, so to watch their precision (not to mention their high kicks!) was just unreal. There was also a 3-D segment that was really fun! I’ll leave you with a few photos I took.

Wearing our 3D Glasses

Santa!

The Parade of the Wooden Soldiers

The Living Nativity

There are a few more here if you want to check them out! We had such an amazing time, I really can’t say it enough. After it was over, we checked out the Rockefeller Center tree. It’s not lit yet, but it’s up and decorated. We walked around a bit, had lunch and then headed home. Jake was worn out (understandably). There’s nothing like Christmas in the city, that’s for sure.

Saturday In The City

For my birthday, my mother-in-law and aunt-in-law gave me a ticket to see the revival of American Buffalo on Broadway. (Drew was responsible for his own ticket, heh!) I am a big fan of David Mamet, so I was thrilled. We saw Glengarry Glen Ross when it was back on Broadway in 2005 (funny, I was pregnant then too!).

We dropped the boys off at Drew’s mom & aunt’s house and took the train down on Saturday morning. Usually the train is packed at that time of day, but this time there were plenty of seats. Maybe the rain discouraged people from going in? No matter, I was thrilled to sit and knit for 40 minutes, uninterrupted! I’d packed my purse full of snacks because my nausea has been awful lately. I was so afraid of not feeling well, but I made out just fine. By the time we got to Grand Central it was pouring, so we decided to find lunch there instead of looking for a restaurant. Neither of us remembered Junior’s having a seating area, but there it was, so we decided to try it. (Very little else was appealing to me.) We both got the soup and salad for lunch, and I think that’s got to be the best $10 lunch at Grand Central! First they brought us a bowl of yummy cole slaw and awesome sour pickles. The bowls of split pea soup were huge and came with a delicious pumpernickel roll. The salads were bigger than I thought they’d be too. It made for a healthy, comforting lunch!

Then we hurried over to the Belasco. Neither of us had seen a show there before and it was a very pretty theatre. The show was fantastic and John Leguizamo was just amazing! I’ve always liked him, but after seeing him perform live — wow. What a great actor. It was fun seeing Cedric the Entertainer as well and he was also quite good in his role. Haley Joel Osment was a little bit wooden, but still gave a good performance. The show was well-paced and everyone in the audience seemed to really enjoy it. I know we did! If you have a chance to see it before it closes, I would say — GO!

After that we decided to rush to make a train back to Ossining and got dinner at the diner we went to all the time when we lived there. Then we picked the boys up and headed home. I love going into the city and I’m so excited that we get to do it again in a couple weeks! We are taking Jake to see the Radio City Christmas Spectacular! I am probably more excited than he is. Every single Thanksgiving since I was a little girl, I’d watch The Rockettes in the Macy’s Parade and think about how much I’d like to see them live someday. And I’m finally going to get to do it 🙂 I hope it’s a nice day so we can see the tree at Rockefeller Center. It won’t be lit, but I think it should be up at least. Yay!

So… “The Office”

I was a little disappointed by last night’s “Office” premiere. At the end of last season, I feared that this season the show would start to go downhill and I have to say that the new episode didn’t impress me too much. There were a couple funny moments, but overall… eh. I also thought it was interesting that the main story line in last night’s episode was a contest among the Dunder-Mifflin branches to see which office could lose weight. The office with the biggest weight loss won extra vacation days. Why is this interesting? Did you notice all the commercials promoting “The Biggest Loser?” Coincidence? I wonder… Seemed to me like NBC was trying to make a little connection there.

Anyway. I’ll keep watching because aside from “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report” there is little that interests me on a regular basis. Hopefully “The Office” will pick up steam.

One Day At A Time

Seriously, I wonder if it is just a coincidence that the stars of “One Day At A Time” have had drug and alcohol problems. Did you hear how earlier this month Mackenzie Phillips was charged with two felony counts of posession? She has checked into a drug treatment center, but she’s been abusing drugs off and on for so long I wonder if it will make a difference.

I also just read that Ryan O’Neil (remember him, from the movie “Love Story”)and his son were arrested on suspicion of drug possession. Plus, in June his daugher Tatum was arrested for trying to buy crack cocaine. Instead of jail time, she agreed to attend a two half-day drug treatment sessions in addition to paying a fine. It’s so sad how these people who you would think have it all, are so clearly falling apart. 🙁

Fun at the Fair

Dutchess County Fair

We did end up going to the Dutchess County Fair the other night and it was a lot of fun! It was incredibly crowded, too, which got a little stressful at times. Still, the boys enjoyed it. I’m so glad we have a wagon for them to ride in! It makes these kinds of events so much easier. The downside to the fair is, as you can imagine, the price of everything. Good grief! I can’t believe how much money we spent on so little 🙁 But we expected it. I guess that is why you don’t go every year! You have to buy ride tickets, so we bought just enough for both boys to go on four rides. (Apparently rides are included in admission at the Ulster County Fair so next year we might check that out.) At least they enjoyed themselves — that’s what matters, right?

We also decided to play a couple of the carnival games. The first was a water squirting game that Drew played with Jake. They did not win, but the guy who did gave his stuffed frog to Jake! How nice was that? Then I played a dart throwing game and kicked butt 🙂 Of course, the carnie weaseled another $5 out of me, but at least Noah got a prize too. Unfortunatley I have to sew up the stuffed doggie because it had a rip in it that I didn’t noticed until later in the evening. Sigh…

We actually took it really light on the food. We had some awesome fresh-cut french fries (probably the deal of the fair!). For $3 we got a heaping carton of them. The pretzel was also amazingly good. Drew and I shared a gyro and it was decent, but we are spoiled by some great Greek restaurants so we have high standards 🙂 I wanted to try these ribbon fries, but they were $7.00 and then the toppings were 50 cents extra, so we skipped that. We decided instead to stop at Del’s on the way home for ice cream cones. It ended up being much cheaper and we felt good about supporting the little guy. I felt bad because it was *so* dead over there. Usually it’s really busy around 7 PM, but with the fair down the road, I guess it’s slow this week.

People watching was fun too. There were lots of aging hippies, people wearing leather clothing and body jewelry, and some really bad hair (hello, mullets!). It’s good to go every couple years, but I am “fair’ed out” for a while I think!

Fair Time!

I’m so excited! This afternoon we are going to the Dutchess County Fair over in Rhinebeck. We haven’t gone in a few years, and I think the boys will really enjoy it. I picked up discounted tickets last week, and kids are free, so I was able to save a little money on admission (only to spend it on food I am sure)! The last time we were there (probably four years ago) I tried a fried Oreo. It was OK. I liked it, but I probably won’t waste my calories on that again. I am hoping to indulge in some fried dough (preferably apples & cinnamon or powdered sugar — though Drew likes tomato sauce on his). We’ll see what else they have. Maybe fried mushrooms… or a loaded baked potato… or candy apples. Mmm! What are some of your favorite fair foods?
