Blogging Like it’s 1999

Well, it’s been a while. Again. The other morning I was scrolling through my Instagram feed and saw this image and it reminded me of my poor, neglected, little blog here.

Rhonda’s comment reads,
“Listening to Prince and reading all your heartwarming comments yesterday gave me an unexpected but fun idea. If any of you are keen to join me and return to blogging the way we used to when it all first started, then please use this awesome Prince-inspired hashtag, #letsbloglikeits1999, so that we can all follow along! Who knows—maybe this is how we get the movement started? 🙂

Friends, let’s blog like it’s 1999!

Who’s in?”

The funny thing is… I actually started blogging in 1999. Back then we were calling them “online journals” but… yeah. I’ve been at this for quite a while and I definitely support Rhonda’s sentiment of blogging like it’s 1999. I love that other bloggers are embracing this, and I know I keep saying I want to write more, I want to get things down. And then… well… life kind of gets in the way. Work, family, chores, a freaking pandemic. It all just snowballs, doesn’t it? But I think I’m going to print out this Instagram pic and keep it in my planner where I’ll see it every day and it will hopefully remind me to get on here more often.

{Catching Up} Rhinebeck Sheep & Wool 2014

You might think that as an avid crocheter and sometimes-knitter who lives right here, I’d go to the famous NYS Sheep & Wool Festival (commonly referred to simply as “Rhinebeck”} every year. Well, truth be told, the crowds often make me rather anxious and the traffic near the fairground can get snarly so it’s been a while. This year, however, was different. I found out that one of my oldest blogging friends (who lives on the complete other side of the country), was going to be there. No way was I going to miss my chance meeting the lovely kadyellebee!

I don’t remember if Kristine and I originally “met” on a wedding planning e-mail group, or via our blogs, but we’ve known each other since probably 2000. No matter, it has been a very long time of knowing someone online. Kristine noted that we knew each other long before either of us picked up a pair of knitting needles! Needless to say, it was an absolute thrill to meet this lovely and talented lady. Kristine is as sweet in person as she is online and I hope someday our paths will cross again!

Kristine & Me!

It was an absolute perfect day to wander around looking at lovely things. I visited some of my favorite yarn shops, felt lots of beautiful wool, and was inspired by so many of the designs I saw. I didn’t spend too much money this time around. I felt a little overwhelmed by the variety of colors and weights and my head just spun as I wondered what to do with it. However, I did fall in love with some of the yarns from Maple Creek Farm.

Their gold-flecked yarns drew me in, and I ended up purchasing a hank of silk/superwash merino in this gorgeous shade of red. (The needles were a freebie!) I also picked up a felted stress ball that smells deliciously of peppermint, a vintage hankie (50 cents! How could I say no?), and a quilted sachet made from vintage fabrics.

Rhinebeck Haul

It was definitely a fun day out and maybe I’ll even go again next year 🙂

Ultimate Blog Party 2014 #UPB14

Ultimate Blog Party 2014

Well hello! It is that time of year again… time for the Ultimate Blog Party, brought to you by 5 Minutes for Mom. I always enjoy this blog party. It’s such a fun way to connect with other bloggers and discover great new reads. (But you probably know that already!)

A little about the blog. . .  I write about a little of this and a little of that. I write about food and crochet a lot! I love cooking and trying out new recipes. Sadly, I have not had as much time for crochet lately as I would like, but I’m definitely trying to make time for it because it is good for my soul.

If you look to the sidebar on your right, you’ll see a list with some of my more popular posts. Somehow, that recipe for Glitter Grapes is still my most popular! (They are really good… I think so anyway!).

A little bit about me. . .  My family and I live in New York’s beautiful Hudson Valley. If you’re a knitter or fiber enthusiast, you might be familiar with the area since Rhinebeck is where a very large Sheep & Wool Festival takes place every fall. While I grew up in western Massachusetts, the HV really is a beautiful adopted home.

My husband and I have three children. Jake is my 11 year old, Noah is 8, and Laura is 4. They definitely keep me on my toes!

Family Portrait Fall 2013

I work part-time as a library clerk, a job I absolutely love! I also help manage our summer reading program and head up our library summer camp. It’s wonderful seeing kids get excited about reading! I’ve also done a lot of freelance writing, I’ve owned a wine shop, and I’ve been managing editor of a telecommunications magazine.

I guess the best way to “get to know me” is just by snooping around my blog. Check out a recipe or two, see what I’ve been hooking up, or just what’s new in my life.

I am really looking forward to visiting everyone and hopefully making some new bloggy friends! Thanks for stopping by — be sure to leave a comment so I know you were here and I promise to make a return visit to your blog. Have a great day! Oh, and you can follow my blog with Bloglovin!

P.S. Feel free to keep up with me on FacebookTwitterPinterest, or Instagram, and Google+ too!

Easter 2013

{CLOSED} 13th Blogiversary Giveaway

blogiversary

Thirteen years ago I was sitting in my cubicle in a Norwalk, CT office. (Next to the Chick in the Kitchen, actually!) I’d just grabbed a coffee on the way in to work and decided that this was the day I was going to purchase a domain. It was a big deal back in those days! I had an online journal, but was curious about this thing called “Blogger” and wanted my own space on the web.

I tossed a few ideas around in my head and then I looked down on my desk and saw something that resembled this:

puresugar

And that was the beginning of a crazy journey through this world of blogging. I started out using Blogger, moved over to pMachine (which is still my favorite blogging platform of all the applications I’ve used), and made my way to WordPress somewhere around 2006. I’ve “met” more creative, wonderful people than I can count. Many of these online friendships developed into honest-to-God real friendships and I can’t imagine my life without them.

My blog has seen me through my wedding, the birth of three children, the purchase of our current home, the purchase and sale of a wine shop, taking up scrapbooking (oh, remember the recipe swaps?) and eventually giving it up because there just wasn’t the time anymore, learning to knit, learning to sew, learning to crochet, and many other crafty pursuits. I’ve blogged about sleepless nights, my kids’ milestones, what I’m making for dinner, what I wish I was making for dinner, and many boring stories about “a day in the life.”

I “quit” once. Went on hiatus several times. Changed the name once. (Anyone remember “Parapluie”?) Went private for a while. Deleted and started with a clean slate a few times (but oh, to have all those archives… if I’d only known).

Somehow I can’t imagine not having a blog, especially after all this time. It’s nuts, I know. And I’ll bet that the people I know in real life who know about this blog probably think it’s totally weird. But that’s OK! The people who know me in real life already know that I’m weird in general 😉

Anyway, it’s hard to imagine that if my blog was a person, she’d have her period and be thinking about boys in between writing bad poetry and painting her toenails. Especially since I wasn’t sure I’d even make it through the year when I first hit that “submit” button.

To celebrate this occasion, I’m hosting a giveaway right here, right now!

Rules:

  • Open to U.S. residents 18 and over only.
  • Giveaway will close at 3 PM Eastern Time on Friday, Sept. 20, 2013.
  • Winner will be chosen by Random.org and posted on the blog by 5 PM the same day. To enter, just leave a comment on this post (the link is at the top, right under the title) — simple as that!

Please make sure that you use a valid e-mail address when filling out the comment form. If I can’t get in touch with you, I can’t send you the goodies! So. I bet you want to know what I’ve put together, right? Well, it’s a little bit of this and a little bit of that. I chose items that sort of encompass bits of my personality. Kinda like Oprah’s Favorite Things. Only I’m not Oprah and… well, this is on a much smaller scale 😉 Anyway, on to the giveaway!

13th blogiversary giveaway

  • 25 yards (total) of baker’s twine — 5 yards each of red, blue, yellow, green, pink
  • 6 yards (total) of fold-over elastic — 3 yards each of red and turquoise (this stuff is great for making hair ties!)
  • 3 spools of washi tape
  • 1 set of embroidery patterns from Sublime Stitching (“Gothic Grandeur” — since Halloween is around the corner I thought this was perfect)
  • 1 vintage crochet pattern booklet
  • 2 crocheted dishcloths (made by me!)
  • a few fun paperclips
  • a sampling of my favorite tea (Harney’s Hot Cinnamon Spice)
