A Slow Start

Although I wasn’t exactly thrilled to be woken up at 5 a.m. by my phone, ultimately the 2-hour delay for school ended up being a wonderful thing! After letting the kids know they didn’t have to rush, I crawled back in bed and didn’t get up until about 7:30 a.m. (which is on the “late” side for me)!

It’s really no surprise I was exhausted. On Monday I was up since 3 a.m. with my previously mentioned heating issues. I woke up around 2:45 and noticed how cold it was, so after about 15 minutes of wondering I got up, saw that the thermostat was reading only 60, then went down cellar to restart the boiler (it had been giving us issues all weekend, so I was already anxious about it). When I couldn’t get it to restart, I thought I may as well build a fire in the wood stove so the house warms up. Drew then came down asking me what on earth I was doing, so after explaining it all he checked it out (with no better outcome), and we were both wide awake so… yeah. I was really in need of a good night’s rest.

Although I still had to leave for work at my usual time, the morning still took on a slower pace since there was no need to rush people out the door by 7:00 a.m. There may have only been a coating of snow, but there had been ice and sleet overnight and on our narrow, windy, hilly country roads, it’s always best to be cautious, especially when school busses are involved.

How I wished I could linger longer over my coffee and crochet, though! It would have been a lovely day to cozy up with crafts and books and movies. Alas, I was at my desk by 9:10, but at least I felt ready to take on the day. It really is amazing what a little extra rest can do for your attitude!

Menu Plan Monday, 2023 Week 5

I’m already two dinners into the week, but better late than never for my Meal Planning Monday post, right? Well, you’ll have to forgive me — we were dealing with some heating issues today (all fixed for now, thankfully). As you can imagine, I was otherwise occupied!

Anyway, I wanted to mention that last week got thrown so off the rails. I am not sure why I even made a meal plan up because I barely followed it at all. We will see if this week goes any better! Hopefully it will.

Sunday: MYO pizza (we use an Aldi cheese pizza and everyone tops a quarter of it with their favorite toppings), Buffalo wings.

  • Monday: Drew’s marinara with hot Italian sausage, whole wheat spaghetti, Caesar salad
  • Tuesday: Rotisserie chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans
  • Wednesday: Something in the Crock Pot – haven’t decided yet
  • Thursday: Cod piccata, roasted potatoes, steamed broccoli
  • Friday: Probably take-out
  • Saturday: Copycat Texas Roadhouse Roadkill burgers, oven fries, garden salad

For baking, I have some tired bananas for banana bread will definitely be find its way into the oven on Wednesday. I also have a new recipe for Indian Lentil Soup that I want to try. I’m hoping it’s close the soup I used to get an a local Indian restaurant.

Are you trying any new recipes this week?

Favorite 80s Movies

I have always loved spooky, scary stuff and of our three kids, my 13-year-old daughter is really the only one who naturally gravitates towards it as well.

Tonight she wanted to watch The Lost Boys, which watched SO many times when I was her age! (Wow I had a big celebrity crush on Corey Haim, LOL!) Funny, even after all these years I still know most of the lines, and the music! What a great soundtrack. It’s a lot of fun to watch and a fun way to spend Friday night.

Scenes From a Snow Day

Snow Day

We had another snow day today! Yes, my phone woke me up bright and early at 5 AM with a text that school would be closed due to the forecast. The weather didn’t turn out quite as snowy and slippery as they had predicted, but I was glad the district erred on the side of caution. We all enjoyed a cozy somewhat snowy day!

Snow Day

I started out with some chores. (I don’t work on Wednesdays and I highly recommend the 4-day workweek!) Typically I do my big grocery shopping trip on Wednesday mornings, but because I went on Sunday this week I didn’t need go out anywhere. So I swept, vacuumed, and washed the floors; folded and put away baskets of laundry; tidied up the kitchen a bit; and generally puttered around.

For lunch I made kale & chickpea curry, which happened to come out extra delicious for some reason!

Snow Day

I also made this little cake, just to have something yummy on a snow day.

Snow Day

After lunch I settled down to relax a bit with my book. I am about halfway done with Local Woman Missing by Mary Kubica. I feel like I have been working through this forever, and I guess I have but it really is a great read! I had to finish my book club book first. Hoping to finish it up in the next couple of days and then get started on her new one, Just the Nicest Couple.

Snow Day

While Drew was in a meeting I snuck in a episode of Bling Empire New York. I cannot watch this when he is in the room because reality shows like this drive him nuts. Yes, this show is utterly ridiculous, but… it’s a guilty pleasure, what can I say?

While watching trash TV I worked on my shawlette. I bought this yarn at Sheep & Wool back in October –its the Star Shower Collection in Nautilus from Chincoteague Colors. I think I tried two other patterns with this yarn, but neither was right. However, I am loving hooking up the Dragon Fin Shawlette. It’s a pretty easy pattern and shows off the sparkles in the yarn nicely. I will need to get photos in better light!

The cats also enjoyed snoozing quite a bit today. Marlowe was not too thrilled that I woke him up for this photo, but he’s just do darn cute! I couldn’t resist.

Hope you all had a great day too!
