The other day I received a letter from the school system in the mail. It had the name of Jake’s teacher, his room assignment, as well as the school supply list. Eek! It’s so weird to think that come September he will be away all day, five days a week in school. How is that possible? Five years passes mighty fast. I don’t know what it’s like where you live, but pretty much all the school systems around here have full-day kindergarten. To me, that seems like it would be a long day, but I’ve been assured he will not find it that way. I just have to work on getting him going in the morning. Wake-up call is not a problem. As most of you know, my lovely children are even earlier birds than myself, and getting Jake to stay in bed until 6 AM is considered a victory! However, getting dressed and fed can be quite a production, so I’m starting to work on that with him now.
He’s also excited about taking lunches to school. The other day we were looking at the Kid Eats Flickr group, and he was pointing out everything he liked. I’m toying with the idea of getting one of those Laptop Lunchboxes, but I might see if the Lunch n’ Things container I’ve ordered will work for now. I was also very happy to read in the letter that the school requires you pack a healthy afternoon snack for the kindergarteners. I’m not sure what time they’ll eat lunch, but I do know that Jake can get nasty mid-afternoon if he doesn’t have something to eat.
Everything was just so organized telling me what I’ll need to get! It’s such a refreshing change from his nursery school which often kept me wondering just what was going on. We’ll get another packet in mid-to-late August and he has an orientation on August 29th where he’ll see his classroom and meet his teacher. ::sniff:: My little guy is growing up!
I really can’t imagine! I know that I’m going to bawl my eyes out when Lucas and Meredith go off to kindergarten! hehe 🙂 I’m glad that everything is so organized. School supplies ~ what fun! 🙂 I’ll have to check out that Flickr group. Might provide some good ideas for us for Lucas.
Exciting!
I’m excited about preschool this fall. I want to get the kids the laptop lunch boxes but it’s just too big for the next few years of preschool 2 hours a day. Eli hardly eats before noon so I just got him this from the lady on my block selling Tupperware- http://order.tupperware.com/coe/app/tup_show_item.show_item_detail
Dude, I’m a boob. The thing I was trying to link to was the Lunch N Things thing you tried to link to, ha!
I’m still in shock about the all-day kindergarten too. That seems so long for a little kid! When I was five we went either in the morning or in the afternoon, not all day. Yikes!
It is hard to believe our little people are old enough for school! I think we let our blink last a little too long 😉
Those lunches on the Flickr group look so good! Those bento boxes are such great ideas. Must file this away for the future!
T is only going half-day, and considering how well he did full days at preschool, I don’t think I’d mind if he went a full day. I know some of the working parents around here wish that it was a full day. Anyway, he’s excited about riding the bus, and taking a lunch as well. I wonder how long before that wears off?! I’m excited about the quiet from 8:30-12:30 that I will have (whoops, was that out loud). Though I know I will get sniffly when I see him go off by himself. Preschool didn’t make me sad, but the thought of kindergarten certainly does.
Sean starts in Jan/Feb and for the first month they do four full days a week and then start five full days. Our principle has warned us that he’ll be very tired and to allow for that. She told us to avoid extra-curricular activities on weeknights for the first six months or so, so that he can have a rest period every evening. It definitely makes sense.
Sean sill naps in the afternoon, and she told me to keep that up as long as possible as long as it’s not affecting his nightly sleep. She even suggested maybe giving him a short nap after school if he’s still napping at that stage.
I hope Jake has a fantastic time!
