Sinterklaas Celebration

So, the plan today was to attend some of the events going on at the Rhinebeck Sinterklaas Festival. Last spring, there were mentions of it in the school newsletter. They were starting to collect all kinds of baubles from glitter and feathers to buttons. This is for the children to make crowns and wands and things to carry in tonight’s parade. In addition to that, there’s all kinds of storytelling, puppet shows, events, and of course Santa and the town tree lighting.

I was starting to get excited about going and the “Grumpuses” even visited the elementary school and danced for the kids, which got Jake super excited about it. Of course, this morning he has been nothing less than a grinch, so now I am not so sure about going. It’s not going to be any fun if he’s full of bad attitude. Sigh… I hate to have the whole day ruined. Hopefully he can turn it around, because it’s a really special event that I think everyone will enjoy. But at the same time, I’m not going to reward bad behavior. We’ll see.

In the meantime, I have stacks of laundry and dishes to deal with, so I might as well get that done.

What A Show!

I hope my fellow U.S. bloggers had a great Thanksgiving! Ours was quiet and a bit subdued. Unfortunately, my MIL’s cousin’s husband passed away on Thanksgiving morning, so that understandably put a bit of a damper on the holiday. He was very sick with Alzheimer’s Disease, but it was still very sad. All of their children were coming down for Thanksgiving anyway, so at least everyone was together. Drew and Jake are going to the wake this afternoon.

On a happier note, we took Jake to see the Radio City Christmas Spectacular on Friday, and spectacular it was! First of all, we had an absolutely perfect day to be walking around Manhattan. It was chilly, but the sun was shining and it wasn’t windy. We got there in plenty of time, but holy cow — I could not believe the line to get in! It was kind of funny to listen to people freaking out about the line as they tried to find the end. It’s not like the show was general admission; we all had reserved seats! So you stand for an extra 10 minutes or so.

The hall itself is just beautiful. It might have been the biggest theatre I’ve ever been in, I’m not sure. The show itself was breathtaking and I couldn’t help but tear up a few times. I’m not exactly sure why, but Drew and I were talking later and he had a similar reaction. Maybe it’s because of all the history… thinking of people who scrimped and saved to take their kids to this show over the years… of how it is so unique to New York. Of course I’ll also bet that pregnancy hormones had something to do with it for me! Jake was transfixed the whole 90 minutes. Hands down, it is one of the best musical shows I have ever seen. The talent of The Rockettes just blew me away. I can’t dance to save my life, so to watch their precision (not to mention their high kicks!) was just unreal. There was also a 3-D segment that was really fun! I’ll leave you with a few photos I took.

There are a few more here if you want to check them out! We had such an amazing time, I really can’t say it enough. After it was over, we checked out the Rockefeller Center tree. It’s not lit yet, but it’s up and decorated. We walked around a bit, had lunch and then headed home. Jake was worn out (understandably). There’s nothing like Christmas in the city, that’s for sure.

Simple Christmas

This morning as I read the news online, I saw a piece about the new Christmas ad from the American Humanist Association. Now, I don’t consider myself super-religious or anything. I am a bad Catholic, at best. But still, I got a bit annoyed over the slogan, “Why believe in God? Just be good for goodness sake.” I have friends who are agnostic or athiest and I respect their beliefs. And I get the point of the ad. I don’t think it’s meant to be malicious. I know they’re making a point. But I have to say that it chaps my hide to put this message in the context of Christmas, a Christian holiday. It’s celebrating the birth of Jesus. I find it antagonistic (or grinchy as someone put it in the article) to push their agenda during what is traditionaly a season with a religious focus. But I’m not going to get myself in a tizzy over it. They probably wouldn’t care anyway, LOL!

But then (funny how things happen), I watched this video over on Cheryl’s blog and felt a little better:

I’m all about keeping things simple this year, trying to remember the meaning of Christmas, enjoying time with my family, and hopefully teaching these lessons to our munchkins.

And the winner is….

Aren’t you all lucky that Noah decided to wake up at 5 this morning? LOL! After I get him settled with some chocolate milk, I headed over to the Random Interger Generator to pick a number between 1 and 52. Before I announce the winner, can I just tell you how overwhelmed I was by the response to my little contest? Wow! The best part for me has been discovering a whole bunch of great new blogs to add to my reads. I am really excited about that! I wish I could send each and every one of you something, I really do.

OK, I have kept you in suspense for long enough. The lucky number is 16, and the 16th commenter was Elise from Nest Sweet Nest! Congratulations! I will be e-mailing you for your address, so look for that 🙂

Thank you all for entering. Please come back and visit! I will be sure to stop by your blogs too 🙂

Holiday Giveaway!

There are 106 days until Christmas, and I seriously need to get going on my crafting! I hope you all are doing better than I am. But for those who need some inspiration, I am having a fun little knitting-themed giveaway. The winner will get a copy of Handknit Holidays: Knitting Year-Round for Christmas, Hanukkah, and Winter Solstice by Melanie Falick and Susan Pittard. I am also including some yarn from my stash: 2 skeins of Patons SWS in Natural Navy; 1 hank of Inca Alpaca, 1 skein of KnitPicks Andean Silk Twist in Sunset, and 1 hank of Knitpicks Shadow in Redwood Forest.

To enter the giveaway, simply comment on this entry between now and Thursday the 11th. (It is important to leave a real e-mail address, otherwise I can’t get your information to mail out your package!) I will pick a commenter at random on Friday morning and hopefully start someone’s weekend on a happy note 🙂.

Good luck, everyone!

Christmas Giveway… coming soon!

I recently had a little giveaway on my wine blog and I am planning a holiday-themed giveaway right here this week! No, it’s not too early to start thinking about Christmas. Again, we have most of our shopping done for the boys, but I know I will still enjoy perusing the Black Friday ads on Thanksgiving night. I usually find at least a couple deals worth getting up at 4:30 AM for 🙂 But I also am hoping to make a few gifts this year. While I obviously won’t yet say what the giveaway is going to be, I will let you know that you crafty ladies might be interested! So check back on Tuesday morning!

Long Weekend

I hope you all had wonderful Memorial Day holiday weekends (applicable only to those in the U.S., though). Ours was really nice and I’m trying so hard to get back into the swing of things today. Yesterday we went to the parade over in Rhinebeck, like we do every year. It was a lot of fun because Rhinebeck Little League and a local karate school marched so Jake saw a few of his friends. (Little League assigns teams by zip code, not school district, so he got put in a different league with a few other kids from this side of town.) I feel like everyone was throwing even more candy than ever before. Seriously — it was like Halloween, only you didn’t have to go door-to-door! The weather was just gorgeous — an absolutely perfect day for a parade. After it was over we had lunch at Del’s (a local drive-in type of restaurant). We thought it was going to be packed, but we were one of the first people there. We then realized that the way the roads were closed off, it didn’t make it easy to get over there, so most of the weekenders probably lunched right in town. Meanwhile, we enjoyed some yummy hot dogs, cheese fries and soft-serv ice cream cones. So good!

After lunch we went to Home Depot for more pavers. Drew is making a small patio up by the kids’ swingset. We have a small bistro set up there and the patio blocks will look so pretty. We came home and set up the pool for the boys and they splashed around while we enjoyed gin & tonics. For dinner I make ribs, grilled pineapple, and cole slaw. It was just a fun, relaxing day.

Now I’m trying to tackle my to-do list. I’ve got one item crossed off (using one of my trusty personalized pens, of course). Does that count for anything? I really need to rally though and get some of this stuff done. I will probably order a pizza for dinner tonight because today is our first CSA pickup!!! The farm is just down the road from where we usually get pizza, so that will work out great. I’ll update later with a photo of the delicious veggies in our first distribution. I can’t wait!

Easter Sunday

tulips We had such a nice, relaxing Easter this year! The Easter bunny visited our house, of course, and brought the boys a few Easter goodies. I think I probably did the opposite of most moms and went heavy on the candy and light on the toys. We have enough junky toys in the house. The candy is easy to hide and ration out, and it will be enjoyed by everyone. I just didn’t want to buy a bunch of plastic junk just to use for filler. But don’t worry, there were a few things to play with. To share, there was a Superman action figure, a “grow a dino” science kit, and some paints. Plus, the boys each got two books. Jake is really blowing us away with his reading skills, so I thought a couple chapter books featuring Super Fly Guy were in order. They look really cute and should be good “easy reader” books for him. The kids suprised us by not totally pigging out on Easter candy in the morning! They each took a few pieces and that was it.

I made French toast with some cinnamon raisin bread that was going stale, and everyone enjoyed that for breakfast. I felt bad because there were so many things I wanted to make this year (pretzels, Hot Cross Buns…) and it just didn’t happen. So at least we had a special breakfast. Then we were off to Drew’s mom for lunch. She made leg of lamb, eggplant parmesan, salad, roasted vegetables, asparagus, and there were delicious cookies for dessert. I think we all could have benefited from walking on the treadmill after our feast 🙂 Drew and I brought a bottle of 2004 GraEagle RedWing, which went really well with the lamb.

After lunch, the boys had an egg hunt in grandma’s basement. Jake is getting a little too good at these. Poor Noah was left in the dust! They had a blast, though. All in all it was just a fun, relaxing Sunday. Not a bad way to spend a holiday if I do say so myself!

{Recipe} No-Bake Easter Nest Cookies

Easter Nests

With Easter just on the way, I thought I’d share my favorite Easter cookie recipe with you. My good friend Kelly used to always bring back some of these delicious cookies after Easter break and we’d enjoy them with a cup of tea as we watched TV in our dorm room. They’re great to make with kids, too because it’s a no-bake recipe (and it’s messy, so naturally it’s fun!). Be sure to store extras in your refrigerator, otherwise the marshmallow will get too melty and goopy.

I hope you enjoy!
