circus party prep (with resources)

balloon wreath

Lulu’s 2nd birthday is quickly approaching and I am frantically trying to finish up all the prep for decorations and planning. I thought I’d share some of the things I’ve gathered so far. First, as shown above, I couldn’t resist making a balloon wreath. They were all over Pinterest and are so easy to make. You can find tutorials at How Does She and Two More Seconds. I’d like to add my two cents: this is a fun, inexpensive, and quick project. I completed in in under an hour. However, I would highly recommend using a thimble to push those floral picks into the wreath form. I did not and my finger was still hurting the next day. Total cost was under $7. I purchased the balloons at Dollar Tree (three packages) and the wreath form and picks at Hobby Lobby. They were much cheaper than Walmart or Michael’s.

On to lunch! I’ve finalized the menu and I’m keeping it super-simple and kid-friendly: hot dogs (I’ll use my large slow cooker to steam them since I have to make a few packages), mac & cheese, fruit salad, popcorn, and oriental cole slaw. For appetizers I’m planning on making antipasto skewers (not circusy, I know, but I can only have so much junky food) and a veggie tray. Beverages will be water, soda, lemonade, and double-berry sangria (obviously for the grown-ups, and a recipe I have yet to put together). I found these great popcorn bags to use! You can find them all over Etsy (overpriced, honestly). After extensive searching, the best price I could find for a reasonable number was from eBay member “frozendrinks.” It cost $5.65 (free shipping) for 50 bags.

As for the cake… yikes, I’m still deciding what flavor! I will probably do a white layer cake with strawberry filling and white icing. If I can’t find blue and white sprinkles, I’ll use blue and white M&Ms around the outer edge of the cake. Maybe (maybe) I’ll use some licorice whips to make a scalloped pattern along the sides. We’ll see about that. And since I am not a great cake decorator by any means, I’m not trying to make a design on the top of the cake, or even write “Happy Birthday.” Instead, I made a bunting that I will attach to skewers. This was another quick and easy project (also no-sew!). I used ribbon from my stash, fabric glue, and baker’s twine. I’m putting together a tutorial, but I’m sure you can easily figure it out yourself.

Finally… favors. As most people who plan a circus party do, I’m using popcorn containers from Target’s Dollar Spot to hold the goodies. I also have clown noses (purchased from eBay member lookwhatabargain for $5.99/dozen (free shipping)) and animal crackers ($1/box at Walmart). I need to figure out one or two more items.

I still hope to sew a fabric bunting to decorate the food table, but if I don’t get to it… I won’t beat myself up about it. Red and light blue streamers will suffice. I think things are coming together well, and I just hope that it doesn’t rain on the party day!

If there was a Slacker Auntie award, I would definitely receive it. I have a box of Easter goodies for my niece sitting on the dining room table, and I have yet to mail them. But before Easter is out of everyone’s mind, I just wanted to share the shirt I made for my sweet little E.

Lisanne had e-mailed me a link to this tutorial from Girl. Inspired. I thought it was such a cute (and relatively easy!) project and I just had to make one. So I did! This was my first time sewing on a appliqué and I was kind of impressed with myself because I did alright around all those curves!

Laura was very upset that the shirt was not for her, so I think I need to make another one. I also made a coordinating headband. My niece is 17 months old and probably will take it off immediately, but I couldn’t resist. I love when things are all matchy-matchy.

And yes, I know it still looks like the middle of winter out there in my yard. My forsythias look awful, the stupid deer ate all my tulips, and the trees are just barely (finally) developing buds. But that has nothing to do with anything, really.

So this will be on its way either today or tomorrow (the car seat is in the car Drew took to work — see? I am totally disorganized this month!). I hope she likes it!

easy easter desserts

Easter Eggs

Are you looking for a last-minute dessert to bring to Easter dinner? Here are a few ideas for you from my blog archives!

Easter NestsEaster Nests ~
I’ve seen several variations on this cookie, but this version courtesy of my friend Kelly is by far the best!

Sugar Cookie Cake ~ Sugar Cookie Cake ~
This delicious cake is so simple, but perfect after a big dinner. Add a little whipped cream and some fresh berries to make it extra-special! (It is also insanely yummy with some lemon curd spread over the top.)

Under the Sea Jell-O MoldUnder the Sea Jell-O Mold ~
In our family, it’s just not a holiday unless Jell-O is somehow involved. My mom made this dessert for special occasions when I was growing up and it’s a great balance of creamy and fruity.

We’ll be celebrating Easter at my mother-in-law’s this year. I believe that ham and scalloped potatoes are on the menu, but I’m not sure what else. I wasn’t asked to bring anything (sniff, sniff…), but maybe I’m getting a break since I host several other holidays. I might make something anyway. If you celebrate Easter this weekend, what are you taking to dinner?

down to the wire

Oh boy, who would have thought that being down for the count for one day could set me back so far? I was so ill on Tuesday that I got absolutely nothing done. In fact, I took two naps. If you know me at all you know this: I do not nap. I think it was some kind of 12-hour bug because yesterday I was back to my old self. Unfortunately I just can’t make up the lost time.

With this being the case, I’ve decided to cut out a few of the things I was planning to do for Christmas Day — like make a floral centerpiece. I could certainly do a search for a local florist. Something like “flower delivery Mobile, AL” (assuming I was in Alabama). But I think I’ll just use my poinsettia as a centerpiece. You can’t do it all.

I’ve also tweaked my menu (yes, again). So lunch will be:

Spinach & artichoke dip with sweet potato chips
Cheese plate
Shrimp cocktail

Hickory-smoked spiral ham
Meatballs in tomato sauce
Penne a la vodka
Caesar salad
Crescent rolls

My brother-in-law and his girlfriend are going to bring dessert. For Christmas morning, I’ll make some cinnamon rolls and if I’m motivated tomorrow I’ll prep an egg strata since they will be spending the night on Christmas Eve. If not, no big deal.

Hopefully you are a lot more organized than I am!

oh christmas tree, oh christmas tree

… wherever are your ornaments?

DSC_0049

Well, she might not be as bad as Jake was (he broke the antennas of an adorable snail ornament when he was Laura’s age), but she is without a doubt a huge pain when it comes to the tree. She loves taking the ornaments off and bringing them to me, whatever room I happen to be in. We have a whole bare spot that she’s already worked through. Our painstakingly decorated tree now has the ornaments just tossed toward the top, wherever we can get them to stay. Maybe Santa will fix it all when he delivers presents on Christmas Eve 😉 As much as I love our decorations, this year I am really ready to take it all down, just because I’m tired of scolding and chasing Laura around the house, and trying to rescue things before they break.

Next year it will be easier. The boys both know better (and have since about age 2, so that’s why I’m confident that next year won’t be such a problem). They’ve been very helpful redirecting her, and hanging things back up.

Hard to believe that Christmas is so close, though. I still have to finish wrapping some gifts — yikes!

begininng to look a lot like christmas

010
This morning this is what we saw outside!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, isn’t it? It’s just a dusting, but it made me feel a little more festive. I did a little more Christmas shopping today — some toys and mens clothing. I’m practically done! Next week my mother-in-law is supposed to watch Laura for a day so I think I’ll finish things up then.

In today’s mail I received all the photo prints for my Christmas cards, so I look forward to writing out those 🙂 Yesterday we took the kids to see Santa at a local mall. Laura wouldn’t get within five feet of him, but the boys loved it. Noah was so excited he couldn’t stop giggling! This Santa was great. He spent a lot of time talking to the boys and he got a great shot too!

How are you coming along with your holiday preparations?

thanksgiving 2010

What a Thanksgiving this year! Our day started out early… a little too early even for me. Just before 3 a.m. Laura woke up crying. We’d heard her cough strangely, but hoped it wasn’t what we thought it sounded like. Unfortunately, it was exactly that. The poor girl was throwing up every 20-30 minutes. After the second changing of bed linens and pajamas, Drew and I decided to just head downstairs, make a pot of coffee, and start the day. So around 4 he dragged the Christmas tree up from the basement, we put a movie on Netflix Instant, and I rocked Laura who alternated between sleeping and being sick and D. put up the tree. (I sure could have used advise on how to remove dark circles under eyes… it was a looooong day.)

Despite Laura not feeling well, she was a real trooper. She slept on one of us for most of the morning, woke up as our family arrived, and then took a long nap while we ate dinner, so in a strange way it all kind of worked out. My parents, Drew’s mom, his aunt, and his brother all came over and it was a really nice time! The day before I’d made a centerpiece for the table:

It was pretty cheap to put together, considering how expensive floral arrangements are! The boys painted grocery bags and we cut out the leaves. (This craft was in a recent issue of Family Fun.)

I love any excuse to use our dining room and pull out my good china! I think the table looked really pretty and there was plenty of room for the nine of us. I think this is the first time we ever used both table leaves, but it made a huge difference!

While I was cooking, Noah took it upon himself to decorate the Christmas tree. Ahem…

Finally it was time for dinner. My timeline was off by about 30 minutes, but considering the sick baby girl, I didn’t think that was so bad. We had roast turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, baked sweet potatoes with cinnamon butter, green beans, roasted butternut squash and apple with cranberries and pecans, cranberry sauce, cranberry-citrus relish, green salad, corn bread, and wheat rolls. (I think that’s everything.) Dessert was apple pie and pumpkin cheesecake. Everyone was pretty hungry when I made them smile for this photo:

And finally the princess woke up, feeling a little better, but still not quite herself:

thanksgiving 2010

All in all, it was a pretty stress-free Thanksgiving. I loved hosting it and everyone wants us to do it again next year, so I was thankful for that! I don’t mind the cooking, especially when the kids are much better behaved because they have all their toys. So now it’s time to decorate for Christmas and plan my Christmas Day menu!

thankgiving preparations

030

Are you cooking Thanksgiving dinner for your family this year, or are you spending the day at someone else’s house? For the first time in something like 10 years we are hosting dinner! Usually we head down to Drew’s mom’s house, but for some reason we felt like staying home this year. We extended an open invitation to our families and my parents, Drew’s mom, and his aunt will be joining us. I’m looking forward to a day stuffing myself silly and relaxing at home. That’s right, I said relaxing.

I don’t mind the cooking. It’s only four extra people and we have that many over on a semi-regular basis. I roast a whole chicken every couple of weeks; a turkey is just a little bigger! Granted, spending the day in the kitchen isn’t exactly on par with relaxing in a bed made up in luxury bed linens, but it’s not so bad 🙂 As I mentioned before, the menu is relatively simple. I’m not making too many side dishes and I’ve delegated the appetizers and desserts to our guests. Honestly I think this will be one of the more effortless dinners I’ve pulled together for people in a while!

Tomorrow I’ll do a little prep work so Thanksgiving morning I’m not running myself too ragged. I’d like to take a shower and make myself look somewhat presentable, too! I am taking a couple shortcuts, namely bagged salad and pre-made mashed potatoes. My mashed potatoes don’t usually turn out so well, and I had no real desire to peel a couple pounds of them, so I’m letting Bob Evans do the work for me, heh!

One other thing I’m quite excited about is tasting some of the boozy cherries I made back in July. Those little cherries have been sitting in their jars of brandy and amaretto for four months now (!!!) and they’re finally ready to be cracked open. Well, I have my whiskey and ginger ale and I am very much looking forward to garnishing my highball with a few of these babies! I’ll let you know how they taste!

halloween recap

Can you believe that it’s November 1st? Goodness, it’s hard to believe that we’re at the tail end of the year. This morning I actually got out my Christmas cards and labels. In the past I’ve done photo Christmas cards, but this year I’m just going to get photo reprints made. I’ll probably work on those shortly after Thanksgiving, though I’d love to get the photo taken this week if possible. But onto this weekend…

I hope you all had fun yesterday for Halloween! The boys have been counting down to Halloween since mid-month. It’s one of their favorite holidays. We spread it out over the weekend. Saturday afternoon we headed over to the Town Hall where three great local organizations, the library, the Clinton Business Alliance and the Rec Committee put on a very nice trick-or-treat. Here we are, LOL:

Laura was feeling very shy:
halloween

Sunday morning the boys had to dress for the Saints Party at religion class. This is something we never did as kids, so the first couple years I skipped it, but… I guess I can’t avoid it every year. This year the boys went as St. Michael and St. George. Both, conveniently, were knights 😉 Naturally, they had to pose for their photo:

halloween

In the afternoon it was time to get the candy! Our town is quite rural and on our street, the houses are spaced much too far apart for the kids to walk around. So, we go to the mall. It’s easy. It’s warm. It’s safe. And they get loaded up with candy. The Clone Trooper and Darth Vader were ready to rock!

halloween

Laura could not have cared less, really. But she looked cute all dressed up. I made the tutu and let me tell you — I now understand why people charge so much for them on Etsy. They are relatively easy to made, but cutting the tulle is a pain and the whole process gets tiresome after a while. But it worked out in the end

halloween

Originally I wanted to dress up as a witch, but the dress I wanted was gone by the time I got around to shopping for it. So Drew and I came up with the idea to go as Sara Pezzini from Witchblade! For a last-minute costume, it all came together pretty well. I’m sure nobody got it (well, except at the comic store), but that’s fine. It was for my own amusement anyway!

halloween

And I did a fun manicure, too. The half-moon is one of my favorites and I like how the black glitter and shiny silver looked together:

Everyone had fun and now we have a huge bowl full of candy. Not a bad way to wrap up October 🙂
