The Ice Storm

DSC_0367 Wow, what a crazy weekend. You might have assumed, and correctly so, that as residents of the Hudson Valley we got whalloped with this ice storm that apparently was all over the news. It started on Thursday. School was cancelled and it was cold and rainy (resulting in ice). Thursday night around 8PM our power went out. Now, our power goes out with some regularity in poor weather, so that was no surprise. What *did* surprise me was waking up around 3:30 a.m., still no power, and hearing a chain saw outside. A tree in front of our house had uprooted and fallen across the road. They were clearing it out. This is the tree in the morning.

When everyone was up shortly after 6 and we still didn’t have power, we decided to head down to Stewart’s (provided the roads weren’t slick) for some coffee, donuts, and local gossip. The roads were wet, but not icy at all and the Taconic was in relatively good shape. Props to the Dutchess Co. road crews who were working their tails off! I know they were trying hard to make things safe. Down at Stewart’s we learned that the entire northern part of the county was without power and all but one school district was cancelled. This did not sound good.

We went home, ate, and I went outside to take photos. Shortly after 9 I started to freak out a little. Thirteen hours with no power. Our wood stove was doing a good job keeping the house comfortable, but without power, our well can’t pump so we had no water. Oh, and I had an OB appointment at 4. I decided to take a chance and see if there was any way they could fit me in earlier and thank goodness, they squeezed me in at 10:30! We made the command decision that everyone would go to the OB’s and after that we’d high-tail it to my parents’ in WMass since the power situation here was not looking good.

DSC_0327Driving along was fine until we hit southern Columbia County (right above us — where Lisanne lives). The Taconic was just ridiculous. I don’t think a road crew had even set foot on the highway. For mile after mile we slalomed between trees hunched over the road, heavy with ice. It was beautiful, terrifying, and ridiculous all at once. I only wished I had kept my camera with me instead of putting it in the trunk. Once we made it off the Taconic, we saw three or four police cars blocking the entrance on the other side. Later we’d learn that they closed it off! We must have made it out of there just in time.

At any rate, we made it to Palmer and had a nice visit with everyone. Saturday morning I called the NYS Troopers to check on the Taconic and it was still closed between Rte. 199 and Claverack, so we stayed another night. That worked out because we got to visit with my brother and his wife and had a lot of fun chit-chatting and playing Wii bowling and tennis. Sunday morning the Taconic was still closed off. We decided to take 87 and get lunch out — ya know, just in case we need full bellies for the night, LOL! As it turned out, staying that extra night was a good thing. Our power didn’t come back on until Sunday morning around 11! That’s over 60 hours without power! Wild.

We were lucky that we had a warm, cozy place to go and that the trees around our house were far enough away that nothing was ever in danger of falling on our roof (some people around here weren’t so lucky!). I’ll leave you with my favorite photo. A few weeks ago, my pussy willow bush started to bud and bloom with the warmer weather we’d been having. I love this shot of one of the flowers encased in ice:

TGIF :-)

It’s twenty-five degrees out this morning! Brr! But the sun is shining and that always makes such a big difference. I’m also in a great mood because my friend Jenn from back home is visiting this afternoon. We so rarely get to see each other; it will be nice to relax and visit. She also has two little boys around the same ages as Jake & Noah so they should all have fun playing together. I’m keeping it simple for dinner tonight and just ordering a pizza (though I’ll probably make a salad beforehand, so I just need to take it out of the fridge – gotta get some veggies in, right?).

Yesterday afternoon I went on a baking spree. Jake had a half-day from school, so I wanted to do some fun activities. We baked s’mores brownies (unfortunately I didn’t have any graham crackers, though), and then I made a batch of Italian anise cookies. They came out wonderfully! I will post the recipe later. Everyone enjoyed munching on the treats afterwards.

Also, Drew came home last night after a few days in Chesapeake, Va. for work. At least it was a quick trip and he didn’t need to take any luggage. With how expensive it is to check bags, he was sure to travel light! His company’s headquarters are down there and it seems like he might be heading south for business trips more often. He enjoys it though. It’s cool to actually see and talk to the people he usually only converses with via phone and e-mail. And who knows — maybe if he needs to go down there in the summer we could somehow work in a vacation to Virginia Beach! I’ve never been down there so it would be neat to see. Plus, it’s a reasonable drive. We shall see.

Well, I need to get ready for the day and return my library books this morning. Look for the cookie post later on!

What A Show!

I hope my fellow U.S. bloggers had a great Thanksgiving! Ours was quiet and a bit subdued. Unfortunately, my MIL’s cousin’s husband passed away on Thanksgiving morning, so that understandably put a bit of a damper on the holiday. He was very sick with Alzheimer’s Disease, but it was still very sad. All of their children were coming down for Thanksgiving anyway, so at least everyone was together. Drew and Jake are going to the wake this afternoon.

On a happier note, we took Jake to see the Radio City Christmas Spectacular on Friday, and spectacular it was! First of all, we had an absolutely perfect day to be walking around Manhattan. It was chilly, but the sun was shining and it wasn’t windy. We got there in plenty of time, but holy cow — I could not believe the line to get in! It was kind of funny to listen to people freaking out about the line as they tried to find the end. It’s not like the show was general admission; we all had reserved seats! So you stand for an extra 10 minutes or so.

The hall itself is just beautiful. It might have been the biggest theatre I’ve ever been in, I’m not sure. The show itself was breathtaking and I couldn’t help but tear up a few times. I’m not exactly sure why, but Drew and I were talking later and he had a similar reaction. Maybe it’s because of all the history… thinking of people who scrimped and saved to take their kids to this show over the years… of how it is so unique to New York. Of course I’ll also bet that pregnancy hormones had something to do with it for me! Jake was transfixed the whole 90 minutes. Hands down, it is one of the best musical shows I have ever seen. The talent of The Rockettes just blew me away. I can’t dance to save my life, so to watch their precision (not to mention their high kicks!) was just unreal. There was also a 3-D segment that was really fun! I’ll leave you with a few photos I took.

There are a few more here if you want to check them out! We had such an amazing time, I really can’t say it enough. After it was over, we checked out the Rockefeller Center tree. It’s not lit yet, but it’s up and decorated. We walked around a bit, had lunch and then headed home. Jake was worn out (understandably). There’s nothing like Christmas in the city, that’s for sure.

Sneezing My Way Through The Day

Ah yes… the first cold of the season. It hit me yesterday 🙁 Actually, Tuesday night I started to feel under the weather and had a terribly sore throat, and when I woke up well… it was downhill from there. But my amazing husband did all the cooking and offered to watch Noah so I could make a run to Shop Rite. I didn’t really feel like it, but there were a couple really amazing sales I wanted to take advantage of before the weekend. I went to bed early last night and I feel a bit better today. I am still sniffly and not on top of my game, but I’m in much better shape than yesterday! So how about a bullet list of what is new at Chez Carol? 🙂

  • Today is Jake’s open house at school. He absolutely loves 1st grade and Drew and I have really noticed a change from last year. Maybe it’s because a few, er, “excitable” children are in a different class this year. But he is calmer and seems more focussed, so that’s great. Hopefully there won’t be any surprises from his teacher!
  • This weekend I am hoping we can all go and pick apples and raspberries at Greig Farm. I’ve got a baking itch that only apple crisp can scratch!
  • Drew has laid out the bluestone hearth for our wood stove and it is going to look so nice! Just a couple weeks until it is installed. I can’t wait.
  • Which reminds me that I need to order our sectional soon. We saw a very cool one that has built-in cup holders and recliners, but we’re not really looking for home theater seating, LOL. My style is a little more traditional. The one we’re getting is a sage green and has a chaise on one side. Oh, it’s going to be so wonderful in the winter to curl up with an afghan, the fire going in the wood stove, a cup of tea or cocoa, all while knitting or reading a good book! Anyone want to join me?
  • Speaking of books, I have let my curiosity get the best of me and I reserved a copy of Twilight by Stephenie Mayer. I first heard about it over on Sandra’s blog and then my friend e-mailed telling me that I HAD to read them. (She and I were voracious V.C. Andrews fans back in middle and high school!). Of course, there are something like 75 holds for the book in the Mid-Hudson system so it might be a while, LOL!

I guess that is about it. Oh, before I forget, today is the last day for my Holiday Giveaway! And a special hello to anyone finding their way over here from Monica’s wonderful blog, The Homespun Heart! She is writing a wonderful series on Christmas crafts and I am going to make the felted dryer balls she wrote about today.

Well, off to get some ironing done!

Fun at the Fair

Dutchess County Fair

We did end up going to the Dutchess County Fair the other night and it was a lot of fun! It was incredibly crowded, too, which got a little stressful at times. Still, the boys enjoyed it. I’m so glad we have a wagon for them to ride in! It makes these kinds of events so much easier. The downside to the fair is, as you can imagine, the price of everything. Good grief! I can’t believe how much money we spent on so little 🙁 But we expected it. I guess that is why you don’t go every year! You have to buy ride tickets, so we bought just enough for both boys to go on four rides. (Apparently rides are included in admission at the Ulster County Fair so next year we might check that out.) At least they enjoyed themselves — that’s what matters, right?

We also decided to play a couple of the carnival games. The first was a water squirting game that Drew played with Jake. They did not win, but the guy who did gave his stuffed frog to Jake! How nice was that? Then I played a dart throwing game and kicked butt 🙂 Of course, the carnie weaseled another $5 out of me, but at least Noah got a prize too. Unfortunatley I have to sew up the stuffed doggie because it had a rip in it that I didn’t noticed until later in the evening. Sigh…

We actually took it really light on the food. We had some awesome fresh-cut french fries (probably the deal of the fair!). For $3 we got a heaping carton of them. The pretzel was also amazingly good. Drew and I shared a gyro and it was decent, but we are spoiled by some great Greek restaurants so we have high standards 🙂 I wanted to try these ribbon fries, but they were $7.00 and then the toppings were 50 cents extra, so we skipped that. We decided instead to stop at Del’s on the way home for ice cream cones. It ended up being much cheaper and we felt good about supporting the little guy. I felt bad because it was *so* dead over there. Usually it’s really busy around 7 PM, but with the fair down the road, I guess it’s slow this week.

People watching was fun too. There were lots of aging hippies, people wearing leather clothing and body jewelry, and some really bad hair (hello, mullets!). It’s good to go every couple years, but I am “fair’ed out” for a while I think!

Happy birthday, little man!

the birthday boy

"But now I am Six, I’m as clever as clever,
So I think I’ll be six now for ever and ever. "
— A.A. Milne

Six years ago it was hard to imagine that the tiny (well, not so tiny, really!) newborn would so quickly grow into my crazy sweet little boy. And yet here we are. Today Jake turned six. So how about some fun facts? At age six, Jake’s favorite food is pizza. He loves to do arts & crafts, play with Legos and Transformers, and run around outside. His favorite TV show is Spongebob Squarepants. He’ll be entering 1st grade in September. He is wildly affectionate and a fantastic big brother. He cares very much about the world and is very sensitive to other people’s feelings. He’s a darn good kid.

I think he had a good day today. He was thrilled with his presents (minicon Transformers, a Lego set, and a Magnetix set), had a yummy cupcake, had a perfect check-up at the doctor’s, and then got to eat at Burger King for dinner (hey, he’s six — BK is the place to go, LOL!). I have five kids coming over on Saturday (assuming that the people who did not respond are not attending). And Sunday we’ll have the family party, so the birthday celebration will extend straight through the weekend!

I expect that I shall be partied out 😉

How time flies…

CSA Distribution #4

CSA Distribution #3

If it’s Tuesday, you know what that means… CSA day! Yesterday was a gorgeous day and there were tons of people picking up early like we were. Pick-up on Tuesdays is from 4-6, and I usually go right around 4. The past few weeks there haven’t been too many people yet but yesterday it was actually crowded! Very cool. I did see Nate, who writes From the Ground Up, but unlike last week when it was quiet and I was able to chat with Erin, this week there was a lot going on, so I didn’t want to bother anyone – I just let him get on with his work. But anyway, hi! 🙂

This week we got two enormous (and I mean ENORMOUS) heads of lettuce, a head of ENORMOUS Chinese cabbage, a huge head of bok choi, one zucchini, one squash, 5 garlic scapes, pick-your-own peas, 5 heads of broccoli, and 3/4-lb spinach (which I actually passed on this week because I am just spinached-out). The pick-your-own peas was a lot of fun and Jake discovered that he loves (and I mean loves) peapods! How could you not, though? They’re so sweet and yummy. We also bought a dozen eggs from Thunderhill Farm. I don’t remember seeing them there before, but I hope they continue to be sold because it’s convenient and man, those eggs were delicious this morning! They’re over in Stanfordville too so I might need to check them out for poultry.

At any rate, there will of course be lots of salads with the lettuce. I think I’m going to make Dara’s Sweet Sesame Cabbage and Radish Slaw with the Chinese cabbage and I’m going to sautee the bok choi with garlic and olive oil and serve both with pork tenderloin later this week. I still have scapes from last week and thought I’d make a small batch of pesto, but Drew’s not so hot on that, so instead I’m going to make a compound butter with them to keep in the freezer for a very mild garlic bread. I might use more bok choi, cabbage, and peas for a stir-fry this weekend with leftover pork. I’ll make a quick zucchini-squash sautee with parmesan cheese (maybe add canned tomatoes too). And the broccoli will be eaten raw or steamed as a simple side dish.

By the way, I am finding so many great recipes in The Vegetarian Epicure. If you’re finding yourself stumped, see if your library has it! (Note to Dara: there are a bunch of chard recipes in there that sound great, including a crepe recipe!)

Well, I need to get crackin’ and cleaning. This afternoon D.’s dad and brother are visiting. His dad is up from Miami for a few days so that will be fun seeing him! I also would like to take down some of my spring decorations and make it a bit more summery. Have a delightful day!

Lucky Number Seven!

I’m so awful — I can’t quickly find a wedding photo to post on our 7th anniversary! Though I’ll be honest — I have been busy today cleaning and gardening and didn’t put too much effort into it just for the sake of blogging 😉 But yes, my sweetie and I have been hitched for seven years now. On our wedding day at this time, we were all sitting down to an amazing dinner at Travelers Rest! We actually had a low-fi celebration yesterday and just relaxed and had a nice day. Drew gave me a beautiful copper and glass necklace (copper is the traditional gift for this anniversary) and I gave him an Avengers comic with a copper-plated cover. He also ordered us tickets to the Bounty of the Hudson Food & Wine Fesitval, arranged for childcare, and made reservations for an overnight at a bed & breakfast in New Paltz. I am so super excited for out getaway!!! It’s been a while since we enjoyed time away, just the two of us, so this will be great. Plus, we’ll have all day Monday to wander around New Paltz which has some cute shops and restaurants.

It was a great anniversary – and here’s to many more! 😀

If You’re PMS-y And You Know It Clap Your Hands!

*Clap! Clap!* Something you shouldn’t do when your PMSy is look at old photo albums. I was looking at some really old ones yesterday (from when I was just born up until about 3 years old) and good grief if I didn’t get weepy. The photos from my 2nd birthday was pretty funny, though. Man, my mom had some stylin’ maternity clothes in 1977! 😉 Actually they were very stylish for the time, I am sure. I was rockin’ the yellow ruffles myself so who am I to talk? I’m one of those people who cry over pretty much anything sentimental anyway, so throw some freaky hormones into the mix and… well, it wasn’t pretty. There was a lot of mascara smudging and I’ll just leave it at that. Just makes you realize how fast time goes by. Here are a few that I really like:

Surprise for Jake

I love having little surprises for Jake when he gets home from school. It doesn’t happen all the time of course, but today I’ve got a good one for him. He will be really excited about it, too! Late this morning Drew’s dad called me (he lives in Florida) to see what we’re going the week of June 19th. Drew’s stepmom is going to be up in NJ quite a bit for work, and Drew’s dad thought he’d tag along with her for a week. So one day during that week he’s going to come up for the day. We don’t get to see him very often because of the distance, so this will be a real treat for Jake. And my father-in-law just wanted to make sure the timing would work out for us so he could see what is out there for cheap flights. That will be fun!
