saying goodbye is never easy

babciMy last remaining grandparent passed away yesterday. My Babci had spent the last five years in a nursing home and the last few days had been especially bad for her. She’d been sick for a long time and although my mind knows that this is for the best (she hated living like this, when really for the last year it was merely “existing”), my heart is still understandably sad. Though, truthfully, knowing that she is at peace and in a much better place now does make it easier for me.

The other day I read this quote, “Remember how they lived, not how they died” and I have been thinking about that a lot. My grandmother was a wonderful, amazing person who (and I mean this in the best possible way) could also frustrate you beyond belief with her stubbornness. It’s who she was.

She loved reading the Boston Herald and Star magazine. She was incredibly interested in politics and volunteered every election day to help with voting, as long as she could.

She canned gallons of string beans and tomatoes. She made the best pierogis, cabbage soup, and churst. She loved clothes, but rarely bought them new — she loved second-hand shops and her closets were jammed.

She swore like a sailor, which was pretty funny considering how very proper she acted otherwise.

When we were kids, on half-days of school she and our great-uncle would take us to either the Sunset Restaurant for the lunch special or to Ponderosa for the buffet before we walked around the Eastfield Mall. It used to drive me and Mike crazy that she had to stick an apple and a couple rolls in her purse.

Every spring she planted alyssum and marigolds and these small purple flowers (I can’t think of what they’re called) in the raised bed next to her house. She loved the Red Sox. And talk radio. And news programs. Every night she sat on her front porch and prayed the rosary (while simultaneously keeping a very close eye on the comings and goings of everyone on the street, LOL….).

She had the best laugh.

She sewed matching outfits for me and my brother for many holidays. She used to let me use her sewing machine and scraps to make blankets for my Barbie dolls. (And now I have heaps and heaps of unused rick-rack, binding, zippers, buttons and other notions, as well as a stack of fabric that she never used.)

She was a hard worker. She mowed her own lawn well into her 70s.

She got to meet and hold Jake, Noah, and Laura. (She was so relieved when she found out that our third child was going to be a girl; apparently girls take good care of their mamas when they get old — a testament to how amazing my own mother is, I think).

Having lived next door to her from birth until my Junior year in high school, I have so many memories as you can imagine. These are a just a few snippets of who she was. She was one of a kind and didn’t take guff from anyone. She was a great person and a wonderful grandmother.

I’ll miss you, Sophie.

what a week

Is it Friday? Already? And yet in a way this has seemed like a very long week at the same time. It’s been a difficult one, but is happily ending on a positive note. My husband’s aunt has been in the ICU all week and had emergency heart surgery on Wednesday. What started off as “nothing” at the ER on Sunday night turned out to be an aorta aneurysm. Actually it’s the same thing that killed John Ritter only we were a little more lucky and instead of bursting right away, it started with a tear. She’d been experiencing fatigue and early Monday morning, the pressure on the trachea led to loss of oxygen and heart failure. It wasn’t until Tuesday when they discovered what the problem was. Those hours of uncertainty were scary, to say the least.

She’d already had heart surgery once (about 12 years ago), but I am happy to say that she is now doing “very well.” There were quite a few other issues with her heart that needed to be repaired, but she is at an excellent hospital and they’ve taken great care of her. She woke up early this morning and was able to let the nurse know that she was not in pain. They expect to remove the breathing tube today, so that is a very good sign. They were being very cautious with that and did not want to take it out prematurely. I just want to send a sincere thank you to all of my friends who have been thinking of and praying for her. I am convinced that they worked. She will be recovering for several days of course, but all signs are good and hopefully they’ll stay that way.

So I will not be attending Sheep & Wool tomorrow after all, since Drew wants to be at the hospital with his mom in the morning. It’s just as well, probably, because I have a horrid cough and it’s supposed to be cold and wet this weekend. It wouldn’t be smart for me to walk around in that and get myself sicker. Instead I think I’ll build a fire in the wood stove, bake some Halloween brownies with the boys and (hopefully) finish the flowers and sew up everything on my Attic24 bag, work on a pumpkin hat for my cousin’s little girl, and cast on for Colonnade. If I really get itchy to buy yarn, I have a gift card for WEBS that I got for Mother’s Day. I can always browse online. Not quite the same, but… You have to work with what you’ve got 🙂

And in other news… It’s snowing. In mid-October. For real. At least it’s not sticking!

Carolina on My Mind

Our trip to Raleigh last week was such fun! My brother-in-law and his girlfriend J. recently bought a home down there and we drove down so that Drew could help him set some things up. J.’s parents will use it as a winter home and other family members can enjoy it as well.

I’d been to Florida (Miami and Orlando) and Washington, D.C. (for a tradeshow) before, as well as Baltimore (also for a tradeshow), but I can’t say that I ever really got a feel for the south, so I was looking forward to this trip. I was not, however, looking forward to the extremely long drive down there. I can take three hours in a car, max, so this was a real challenge for me. But I managed 😉 We saw plenty of broken down cars, and plenty of RVs, including one that seemed like it was having some major issues. I wonder if there are special trucks for rv towing? There has to be, I guess.

Although we didn’t do too much exploring this time, I did get to finally go to a Chick-Fil-A. I’ve heard about this fast-food restaurant from bloggers living in the south and the midwest. I have to say… it was really good! The chicken sandwich was so much better than McDonald’s or Burger King, and the peach shake I had was so yummy. I also liked that the toys in the kids’ meals were actually activity books — not something associated with a movie or TV show. That was refreshing.

We spent time swimming, hanging out at the playground, and visiting with a family friend who lives in the same housing development. And what’s a vacation without a trip to urgent care? Jake was roughousing with our friend’s son and he got headbutted in the eybrow. Boys will be boys, right? Luckily, it didn’t require stitches, just some superglue. He made out with late-night McD’s and a set of three new Bakugan toys, so he felt better really fast.

We also had breakfast at the State Farmer’s Market. Drew was in biscuit and molasses heaven! My omelet was really good, too. The omelet itself was cooked paper-thin so I really got to enjoy the filling. Next time I’ll remember the stroller when we go so that we can check out the booths. I had no idea how huge it would be.

All in all the trip was quite fun. Everyone down there is so nice. It was a bit like culture-shock for me, LOL! Looking forward to going back down later this year 🙂

Good Morning!

alice-dalton-brown-summer-breeze

Even though I was up crazy early this morning, I don’t even feel tired because I went to bed around 7 last night! I was able to put Laura down (asleep!) in her carrier and thought I’d lie down too. Next thing I knew it was 9 p.m. and she was hungry. We’re working towards sleeping in her crib, but right now I think she’s too small and feels very much alone there. The boys both preferred the infant carrier at the beginning too. This is progress, since for a while at night she’d only sleep on me 🙂 In fact, today she is one month old! I’ll be sure to take some photos later. The last four weeks sure did fly by. A month ago right now I was standing in my kitchen with Drew and my parents, agonizing over the fact that I couldn’t even have a drop of water, getting ready to head to the birthing center for 6 o’clock. And now? I’m watching the news, drinking tea, covered with my cozy ripple afghan, and peeking at my sweet sleeping baby girl. Who could imagine?

It’s hard to believe that tomorrow is the 4th of July; it certainly doesn’t seem like it. The weather has been so cool and wet and not at all summer-like. Let’s hope for sunnier, warmer weather this weekend! You know what’s awful? I’ve been watching all the “fireworks are dangerous” stories on the news and every time I see a mannequin’s arm blown off, I can’t help but laugh for some reason. I know it’s not funny but… something about blowing up mannequins cracks me up. I’m surprised the news doesn’t follow up those kinds of stories with advice to seek out life insurance leads if you plan to be shooting off Roman Candles in your backyard, LOL…

Anyway… we still haven’t decided what, if anything, we’re doing this weekend. It would be fun to take the boys to see fireworks since they’re old enough to both stay up that late for a treat and not be totally scared by the noise. And Laura would probably just nurse her way through it all. Germantown and Saugerties both have fun activities going on tomorrow, so we might venture out there. Kingston is having their celebration on Sunday. We’re not bothering with Rhinebeck since it’s expensive to get into the fairgrounds ($30/car!).

I’m also really into the idea of going cherry picking since Lisanne mentioned it on Facebook. Cherry Ridge Farms in Hudson seems easy to get to and it would be something different to do. We’ll see. Then again, we might just feel like staying home, having a nice dinner (I’m thinking surf & turf — thaw out the lobster tails and filet mignon in the freezer and maybe pop open a bottle of bubbly), and light some sparklers in the yard. What are your plans for the weekend?

Weekend Wrap-Up

For the first time in several months, we headed up to Massachusetts to visit my family this weekend! Actually it was the first time I’ve gone anywhere (besides doctors’ offices) since coming home with the baby. Needless to say it was much-needed and I had a great time hanging out with family and friends. Laura did well on the drive up, sleeping the whole way. That was a relief! When we got to my parents’ house my friend Jenn visited for a bit and then my sister-in-law Kathy came by. She, my mom, and I all were going to my cousin Angie’s baby shower in the afternoon. So I had a nice long visit with  Kathy and we all got to eat yummy food at the shower. I especially loved Angie’s grandmother’s “Cheesy Potatoes.” Oh my goodness — I wonder if she would part with the recipe! So yummy. The cake was adorable (as well as delicious). Don’t you agree?

After the shower we just hung out at my parents’ house for a while. Drew enjoyed looking through my Dad’s tool catalogs and shopping at his favorite store (Ocean State Job Lot) where he was psyched to have found a little tent package on sale. He wants to try taking the boys camping this year. At any rate, we didn’t see my brother this time because he was fishing in Rhode Island. Crazy boy had to get up at 3 a.m. to get down on the water, but at least he caught something — a 36-inch bass! Still, that’s mighty early.

Dad grilled steaks for dinner and we enjoyed them with salad, baked potatoes, and corn on the cob. Basically my all-time favorite dinner! We then got all the kids in their PJs and headed home around 7. It was a long day, but a good one. I’m hoping to go back for a longer visit next month, but this time I just wasn’t up for packing for everyone. Hope you all had great weekends too!

Happy Father’s Day!

Dad & MeA very happy father’s day to my daddy! Yes, that would be me and him, waaaay back when. I wish I could be spending the day with him, but a call will have to suffice for now. I’ll see him next Saturday, though :-). I also kind of lamed out on Father’s Day for Drew this year, but he understands. In a couple weeks we’ll so something special for him. In the meantime, the boys made him cards and #1 Dad buttons. I had originally looked at new grills and at pressure washers for him (he was eyeing them at Home Depot one day), but I think we’ll wait until the end of the season and get a new grill as a belated gift. Ours really has seen better days.

Drew wanted to cook a big breakfast, though, so he dug out the waffle iron and made waffles, bacon, and fruit for all of us. (He loves to cook and has been enjoying the last couple weeks of me not cooking.) We don’t have any big plans for the day. He’s actually working his tail off clearing out the rest of the upstairs furniture so that we can have our carpeting installed on Thursday — yay! The guys are here to paint today, and soon, oh so soon, my house will be back in order. I can’t wait!

Introducing Miss Laura Catherine

laura catherine

We’re home! Please meet our sweet little girl, Laura Catherine. Everything went well with the c-section and she was born at 8:36 a.m. on June 3rd. Now I can say that all of my children were born on a Wednesday — how’s that for a strange coincidence? Everyone fully expected another big baby; after all, Jake was 9 lbs. 6 oz. and Noah was 8 lbs. 8 oz. But we all were proven wrong. Little miss is a very petite girl, weighing only 6 lbs. 3 oz. (the same numbers as her birthdate!) and measuring 19 inches long. She is tiny, tiny, tiny and absolutely charmed all of the nurses at the hospital 🙂

There were no problems with either her or me, so we were able to be discharged early, which was wonderful! I have nothing but positive things to say about my stay at the birth center, but it’s so much more relaxing at home. Overall, I feel really good. I do have some “burning” muscle pain on my right side, low in the pelvic area, but according to the nurses that is probably not from the c-section, but from another relatively minor procedure I elected to have. Aside from that, my recovery has gone very smoothly. All of my tummy functions were right back on track and my pain has been manageable so they could see no real reason to keep me there.

It’ll be much easier for me at night now, since Drew has had to be home with Jake the last couple nights. The nurses were wonderful, though, and both last night and the night before took Laura for a few hours after I fed her, which allowed me to get some much-needed rest. Last night she was feeding constantly and I was just exhausted. But the upside is that my milk has come in and she is nursing great! Hopefully that will continue.

Although I was a little disappointed I did not get the awesome birth center mug full of goodies (like coffee and biscotti) like last time, I have to admit that the swaddle wrap that was in the free tote bag is a pretty great giveaway. She loves being all “burrito’ed up” as we call it, so I can’t wait to try it out tonight. And of course, I made sure to take the rest of the bag of disposable diapers home, too. 🙂

And I just have to say how lucky I am to have such an amazing husband. The construction upstairs isn’t quite done (although sheetrock is up and it’s very near complete — and no I did not climb up all those stairs to look; I saw photos on Drew’s camera, LOL), but he really went out of his way to get things as clean as he could for me, as well as waiting on me hand and foot since we got home.

Tomorrow we’ve invited family members to visit, and I know everyone is looking forward to either meeting Laura for the first time, or seeing her again. I’m so excited to show her off!

Sometimes It’s Nice…

It’s a well-documented fact that I am, for the most part, a morning person. I was up extra early this morning (one of the perils of falling asleep around 8:30, I suppose) and I’m really enjoying the dim light, the quiet sound of rain outside, and my cup of tea without the noise of the TV or anyone calling for me. 🙂

Things are good. Life is good. Time is just rolling along, as I expected it would. The last couple weeks have been busy, busy and here we are, less than a week away from baby girl’s arrival! I figured I’d make this a random sort of entry, hitting on all the things going on. I hope I don’t miss anything!

Shed Dormer Construction
The dormer/upstairs reno is moving along nicely and on schedule! There are updated photos here. Everything is framed in, and yesterday was the framing inspection which was fine. Today I believe the electrician is coming to work on some things and insulation will be put in. If my timeline is correct, Monday will be the insulation inspection and then they will sheetrock everything and finish up. The only inspection left will be for Certificate of Occupancy! We’ve chosen the stain color for the house (similar to our old stain, but a bit more brown) and we have a general idea of carpet colors (a shade of grey for the kids’ rooms and the hallway, and blue for our bedroom). As for paint colors… we’re going with a shade of brown for our room, a very (very) light purple for the baby’s room, and once we get paint chips we’ll work with the boys to help them decide. I’m just so thrilled with this project. The upstairs already looks a million times better! Yes, it’s a lot of money, but in our opinion it’s well worth it. Let’s face it: with three little kids there’s no way we’re going to be jetting off to Europe or looking into Caribbean cruises anytime in the near future. As a “homebody” I would so much rather make our house extra comfy and cozy! This was without a doubt the right thing for us.

Pregnancy
Tomorrow I hit the 39 week mark! Yesterday was my last scheduled OB appointment, and I was in and out as usual. I’ve gained 23 lbs. with this pregnancy, which I know is just fine, but… let’s just hope it all comes off quick! I’ve been so lucky that my only real “problem” has been some back pain of late. My C-section is scheduled for next Wednesday. My OB believes that there are only two C-sections that day, so I’ll need to head to the hospital for either 6 or 7 a.m. and they’ll operate at either 8 or 9 a.m., depending on who is first. My parents are coming down on Tuesday night to get the boys ready in the morning and get Jake on the bus and then take Noah to the hospital after the baby is born. Then he’s going on a “vacation” at their house until Saturday. (Thank you, once again!) Drew’s mom and aunt will be coming up in the afternoon to get Jake off the bus and take him to meet his little sister! One or both of them is also going to be available in case I need Drew to spend the night at the hospital. That one we’ll play by ear. Everything is lined up, and I’m really not concerned about going into labor early. She still feels pretty high up and I’ve been taking it easy the last few days.

Crafting
I’ve not done much in the way of crafting lately. My attention span is so short, and my stuff is boxed up for the most part. I did cast on for the Sarena shrug, which I’ll bring as my  “hospital knitting” since it’s easy and mindless. I’ve also been whipping up little crochet flowers to use up scraps of dishcloth yarn. So easy and cute, see?

I’m looking forward to getting back to sewing once our house is back in order! But for now, all those projects have been set aside. It won’t be much longer, though.

Family
The boys are great! Noah cracks me up on a daily basis. He’s really into Hot Wheels Trick Tracks at the moment. He sets up the loop and the curve and various dino launchers and sees which cars work best. Totally cute. He’s also obsessed with the ABC Song, which I find funny since he refused to count or say his alphabet until very recently. He knew it, but he wouldn’t perform. My independant little guy 🙂

Jake is good, too. School ends here at the end of June, but they are already winding things down a bit, probably because the kids’ are getting antsy. His class is doing a little play, “The Carrot Seed” in a couple weeks, and there’s Field Day and lots of other stuff. He’s still majorly into arts and crafts as well as writing stories and making books. The other day he decided to make a list of all the different fish he could think of:

Jake's list of fish

Well, I finally hear the boys stirring, and this is certainly long enough! Have a great weekend, everyone!

Miscellaneous, in Bullet Form

  • Yesterday was D’s birthday! We had cupcakes and presents on Sunday night and then last night we went to Texas Roadhouse for dinner (because he got a birthday coupon for a free appetizer!). We had no idea, though, that they’d drag out this saddle on a sawhorse, make him sit on it, while everyone in the restaurant yelled “Yee-haw!” at him. I would have been mortified, but he was a great sport and we all had a really good time (and a good dinner!)
  • I feel a little guilty about one of Drew’s presents, because… really, it was more for me rather than him: the Compost Crock. Last year we used a big plastic bowl (with a lid, at least) for our food scraps for the compost bin. However, the shape took up a lot of room and it got gross and smelly. This is much more attractive on the counter, will clean easier, and it has a charcoal filter! I think it’ll work much better than the old garbage bowl.
  • While Drew is in Virginia for a couple days (hopefully the last of these business trips for a few months), my dad is coming down to hang out with us. And he’s going to put up a clothesline for me! We attempted to make one last year with a kit from the hardware store, but it didn’t work very well. I’m so happy he’s doing this for me. I look forward to not having to run the dryer for every single load of wash. Growing up, my mom always hung up the laundry so to me it just makes sense. Plus, it’s one more thing I can do to be more eco-conscious.
  • I think I want to see about trying the Dove Skin Vitalizer deal that is reported at CVS. Even if I can’t get the coupon, $4 isn’t bad — and certainly much cheaper than heading to the spa for a microdermabrasion treatment. Supposedly the Dove product is quite comparable, though obviously not the same thing.
  • I still have a cold. I felt great for about a week, and then Saturday I started to feel crappy. Poor Noah woke up with a cough this morning, too. Hopefully it’ll be short-lived. The fluctuations in temperature and weather can’t be helping!
  • Otherwise, things are just moving right along. I have one more repeat on my ripple afghan and that will be finished. And I plan on sewing up a few more bibs and burp cloths this week, as well as some nursing pads. I’d rather not buy the disposable ones and I have plenty of cotton flannel, so we’ll give it a try! I’ll let you know how it goes.

Oh, That’s Right…

I have a blog. It’s not even like I’ve been that busy, so I guess I just have not had much to write about. Actually, the last two days have been spent primarily in the rocking chair with a sick little boy cuddled up on my lap. Monday night around 10 p.m. Noah started coughing and just didn’t stop no matter what we did. He’d had a bit of a cough off and on since late last week, but nothing alarming. I ended up taking him to the pediatrician yesterday morning and thankfully his chest sounded clear, so the doctor chalked it up to post-nasal drip. Some Benedryl and rest have worked wonders. He’s still in no shape to go out and play or anything, but he’s got a little more life to him today. Poor little man was so pitiful yesterday. 🙁

Let’s see… what else is new. I had an OB appointment today and everything was fine. I hate seeing my weight go up, but at least it’s temporary. I’ll be happy when I can start losing it again. We’ve been watching quite a few movies lately: Klute (awesome 70s pseudo-noir flick), Punisher: War Zone (rather disappointing, read Drew’s take on it), Moving Violation (sheer 80s fun), and The Transporter 3 (entertaining, plus Jason Statham is pretty tasty!). We’ve got Midnight Run coming from Netflix today. I haven’t seen that in ages!

I haven’t done much crafting since I made the crayon rolls last week. I’ve crocheted a few rows on my ripple blanket, but that’s about it. I have lots of ideas, just not the time. Hope things have been swell with you!
