Hello, Spring!

The first day of spring is one thing, and the first spring day is another. The difference between them is sometimes as great as a month.
— Henry Van Dyke, Fisherman’s Luck (1899)

Indeed, in the Northeast the first day of spring might not be too warm (today is a little windy and chilly), but it’s here! It’s here! It’s finally here! I’ve been waiting for this day since winter began 🙂 I actually forgot about it until I was listening to “Writer’s Almanac” on the way to work this morning. Well, with Easter this weekend it will feel extra spring-y, that’s for sure! If you want a fun little thing to do (I bet kids would enjoy this), you can make your own bouquet at Pat’s Web Graphics, like I did.

Rent!

I finally saw Rent...I know, I know! How could I have possibly waited until Thursday to write about it? Well, it’s been a busy week, I guess. But yes we finally saw Rent on Sunday night. I was so sad when the news came out that it was closing in June, and I couldn’t believe that after all these years, after seeing pretty much everything else of interest on Broadway, we might miss this just because we took for granted that it would be around for a while. And it was. Twelve years! I remember the first time I heard the music, in my friend Justin’s dorm room, fall 1996. I fell in love with it instantly. We tried to rush tickets to a Boston perfomance that December, but didn’t have any luck.

The show was as amazing as I’d hoped, and more emotionally-charged than I could imagine. I found myself in tears through most of the second act. I loved it, and so did Drew, which surprised me a bit (he doesn’t often get into the “rock” type of musicals). Truthfully, I prefer plays (not musicals) in general, but this hit me at exactly the right time and I’m glad I can say I saw it on Broadway during its original run. We bought an autographed Playbill (proceeds to to various charities), too.

If you’re thinking about seeing Rent at all before June 1, you absolutely should. I was afraid that after all these years, after all the hype, and after the hundreds of times I’ve listened to the music it wouldn’t meet my expectations, and it did. By far one of the best shows I’ve seen on Broadway!

Old Dunkin Donuts Deal

Sorry guys! Crystal pointed out to me that the free iced coffee at DD’s that I’d written about was a promotion from last year, so I delted the entry. So thanks to her for letting me know and I apologize for getting everyone excited about free coffee.

Top Chef

As you all know, I really, really, really don’t like anything even vaguely resembling “reality TV.” But as with everything in life, there is an exception to the rule, and my exception is “Top Chef” (much to my husband’s chagrin — he hates it). I caught the premiere and I’m curious to see where this season goes. I have my favorites already, but that can change and usually does 🙂 From the first moment of the show I could just tell that Nimma was the one getting kicked off. She didn’t seem confident and doesn’t have a ton of experience, and while I’m sure she has cooking talent… she needed to be a bit more agressive. So, my favorites are: Zoi, Stephanie, Richard (hello – sausage and peach pizza? I have to try that), and Spike. There’s something about Spike that I really like, though I can’t be sure what exactly yet.

WTF with Ryan who didn’t know how to make a classic chicken piccatta? That’s one of my “go to” dishes. I could make that in my sleep!

Who else is watching?

Week’s Eats: 3/17

Here’s what’s cooking at Chez Carol this week. Nothing too exciting, except for the lobster dinner on Wednesday night. Oh, I love me some lobstah!!! But yeah, otherwise, kinda boring.

Monday: Turkey tacos
Tuesday: Loaded baked potatoes
Wednesday: Lobster dinner
Thursday: Tuna wrap, soup
Friday: Dinner @ my mom’s
Saturday: Frozen pizza or grilled cheese sandwiches
Sunday: Easter dinner @ my mother-in-law’s

If you celebrate Easter, what are you planning on making (or planning on eating if you’re going to someone else’s house)? My MIL is going to be making lamb. It’s not one of my favorite dishes ever, but I can think of things I like less (like corned beef!). We’ll be bringing dessert and I’ve decided to turn my Coconut Lemon Mousse Cake into a trifle. It will be easier to transport and faster to assemble. Time is of the essence, since I’ll be putting it all together Saturday after we get home from Massachusetts. And naturally we’ll be bringing wine too, though which one? Thinking of a Meritage maybe… We’ll see.

And yes, I realize that tonight’s dinner — tacos — is not Irish in the least, LOL. Well, we’re not Irish at all and I hate corned beef, as I mentioned above. The boys’ had green bagels for breakfast this morning, though, and I remembered to put a green shirt on Jake this morning. That has to count for something, right? LOL!

CVS Deals For 3/16

It looks like this week will be a pretty good one at CVS! They’re having a couple Sunday-Monday only offers. I will be sure to pick up the Pot of Gold chocolates because a) they are delicious and b) they’re great to have on hand for last-minutes gifts. And how can you beat FREE? Here are the two-day specials worth mentioning:

$.99 Plastic Eggs Large 12ct or Extra Large 6ct – ($.99) ECB Limit 2
$.99 Confectionary Lane Jelly Beans 9oz – ($.99) ECB Limit 2
$4.99 Hershey’s Pot Of Gold Premium or Nut Asst. 7.7-12oz – ($4.99) ECB Limit 2

The other thing I’m really excited about is this one:

$8.99 Maybelline Superstay Lipcolor Or Gloss – ($8.99 ECB) Limit 1

I love when they have free makeup! Plus, there is a coupon for $3/$15 worth of beauty products (Exp. 3/31/08), which I am sure you can work into a deal. I haven’t really put anything together yet, so I need to sit down and do that. Anyone else have CVS plans for the week?

It’s Finally Here!

I’m really looking forward to tomorrow! I am finally, finally going to see “Rent” on Broadway! You might remember that this was my Valentine’s Day gift from Drew. Originally we were going to stay overnight in the city and wander around on Monday, but unfortunately due to work that isn’t going to happen; we had to cancel our hotel. Oh well. Maybe we’ll be able to do an overnight in the city during the summer. Nevertheless, we’ll have the afternoon to walk around, then we’ll get dinner before the show which starts at 7PM. I still can’t believe it’s closing in just a couple months! At least I’m finally getting around to seeing it. I will be sure to let you know how amazing it was, don’t worry!

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Checkout

I meant to write about this after it happened last weekend because I thought it was so funny, but I totally forgot until just now! So, last Sunday we braved Wal-Mart for grocery shopping because we happened to be in the area. It has been ages since Drew and I have had beer, so I decided to purchase a six-pack of Magic Hat. The cashier rang up my carful of items and finally got to the beer. Guess what? She carded me! She asked to see my ID and I smiled and laughed and said, “You bet!” Holy cow, I can’t remember the last time I was carded… (Usually I’m the one doing the carding, LOL.) So I felt quite flattered for about 10 minutes, thinking I must have looked prety darn good. Until I was looking over my cash register receipt and saw that they have a new policy: the check IDs for anyone who appears to be under 40. Forty! Thirty seems pretty reasonable, and that’s generally the policy we have, but wow… 40. So I didn’t feel as excited after that, but I still thought it was pretty interesting.

“The ratio of people to cake is too big.”

Over the last few months I’ve reconnected with some of my former co-workers thanks to the magic of Facebook. It’s been neat to see what everyone is doing these days. Sometimes when I look back, it seems like we working in “Office Space Connecticut” (you have seen the movie “Office Space,” right?). The little things that made me so crazy back then make me laugh now. I guess it’s just natural to look back through rose-colored glasses, but seriously… some of the stuff that went on in that office would have made for funny movie scenes!
