It Finally Clicked

I know a lot of kids Jake’s age have been writing their name for months now; however Jake’s had a hard time with it. He has amazing vocabulary and conversational skills (and he tested at the top percentile when he went for Kindergarten screening), but writing has not come easy. I’ve been fighting with him over it since last summer. The interest just hasn’t been there. And suddenly, this!

SP10 – Package the second!

Yesterday I received my second package from the Secret Pal 10 exchange and inside was delicious Euroflax linen and Classic Elite wool-bamboo yarn in yummy shades of green, and delicious dark chocolate (Green & Black’s!) I’m not sure if the green theme was intentional but I thought it was clever. So thank you once again, secret pal! You have picked out perfect yarns that I can’t wait to use! (And chocolate I can’t wait to nibble on!)

A Great Mother’s Day

I hope all the moms reading my blog had a delightful day yesterday! Mine was especially nice. It was gorgeous out, so the weather in and of itself put me in a good mood. I had big plans on sleeping in, but at 5:30 I was wide awake, so that didn’t quite happen! But I did laze about in bed until about 6:15 when everyone else was up. Jake was super excited and led me into the kitchen where Drew had arranged my gifts 🙂

I was totally spoiled! I knew about the ’97 Chalk Hill Merlot because we were talking to the winemaker at the tasting we went to last week and he said it should be drinking perfect right about now. And since there were only one or two bottles left at the store, we decided to take one and I requested it for Mother’s Day. But the flowers, Ommegang Witte beer, notecards, and movies were all a surprise. Plus, when I checked my e-mail, I had a gift certificate from Amazon as well!

We leisurely got ready and then headed down to opening day at the Rhinebeck Farmer’s Market. All the moms got a free seedling; I chose Bee Balm. The market was a little overwhelming because it was crowded and I think a lot of “weekenders” were up from NYC. We did purchase some green peppercorn goat cheese and some spinach and organic white bean dip, though. Both are incredibly delicious! I think the spinach and bean dip would be even better if I warmed in the oven and melted some cheese over the top. I might try that later this week.

We spent the afternoon at home. Drew did some work around the house and the boys and I played. After they went to bed Drew grilled a sirloin steak which I slathered with blue cheese butter (recipe from the April 2007 issue of “Everyday Food”). Wow! Amazing! We had asparagus with it which was yummy as well, and then the Chalk Hill Merlot, which I’ll detail in another post. And that was pretty much it! My brother and his fiancee had the moms over for a late lunch and it sounds like they all had a great time as well!

Tag – I’m It!

OK, even though Suzie just made me post seven random things about myself, I shall post seven more because Devon tagged me, and really, there is no shortage of random information about myself. So here we go!

1) I don’t like to sleep with the closet doors open.
2) I want to get a tattoo of a swallow on my left shoulder. I’m not sure if I’ll actually do it, but I think about it a lot.
3) The only play I’ve ever acted in was a community theatre production of “The Wizard of Oz.” I think I was in 4th grade? However, I have been involved behind-the-scenes in several capacities of many others.
4) I am snobby about a lot of things. I’ve been in denial over it for years, but the fact is… I am.
5) I love socks, but I prefer to go barefoot.
6) I cry at anything sappy — cards, movies, TV commercials. It’s pathetic, really.
7) I am very shy and quiet in person when you first meet me. Until I have a couple drinks. Then you can’t shut me up.

I’m not going to tag anyone, but if you post this on your blog, leave a comment so I can go and read it!

Spring Into Summer Contest

My hostess is having a little contest, so here are my answers to her questions!

1) What is one baked item you love making or buying and why? Pie! I love baking pies and I always feel that since there is fruit in them, at least I’m getting a little bit of something nutritious.

2) What is one item you love to knit and why? Felted bags. I just think the transformation of the wool is fascinating! Plus, they’re useful.

3) Favorite outdoor activity and why? When we lived in a neighborhood with sidewalks, I loved going for walks because I got to be nosy and chat with neighbors, see what everyone was planting in their gardens, and just enjoy some fresh air at a leisurely pace. Now… hm, does playing on the swingset with the boys count?

4) Favorite way to relax? Glass of wine and some knitting (of course!)

Knitting Meme-age

Because I’m in like three different knitting swaps right now I have had the pleasure of discovering a bunch of new knitting blogs! The talent out there is just astounding to me. I can only hope that someday I am half as good a knitter as some of these people are. Wow. And while I was clicking on everyone’s links over the past few days I came accross this, and thought it would be fun for me and absolutely boring for anyone not interested in knitting, so it shall go under the cut:

Mark with bold the things you have ever knit, with italics the ones you plan to do sometime, and leave the rest:

More Jell-O Love

I found these molds at Stop & Shop the other day — 10 cents apiece! I bought four: three “orange” and one “lime.” Aside from the color of the silicone, I don’t see what the difference is. Should be fun to play with, though. And since they are oven-safe, I don’t see why I couldn’t use them for cupcakes (er… fruitcakes?) too. Ooh, ooh, ooh — or to make giant ice cubes to float in a punch bowl. (Perhaps for bithday parties and such).
